Two candidates are offering different views of the same old privatization version of government. But one candidate has the courage to stand up for a citizenship form of government. That is our governor Deval Patrick.
The privatization of the government vision says you are on your own. Government must be broken up and sold to the highest bidder. Service will be provided on a pay-as-you-go basis; those who cannot afford it do not get the service. Citizens with fiscal or mental handicaps are forced back into the dark corners that society put them in a century ago. Abused and abandoned children fend for themselves, without guardians, in a cold world. Soldiers – and their families — are ignored by the society they fought to protect. Unemployment and first responder services are discontinued. The Commonwealth’s social safety net will be wiped out, replaced by free market services. In this vision profit is king, there is no room for libraries, art, community programs and anything that is not profitable. The bottom line trumps the moral spirit of society.
The citizen government vision makes demands on each person to be more than what we are. We are individuals in a society that is linked together by the common needs that government fills. The vision is built on the belief that a society is judged by how the least fortunate among us is treated. Those citizens with fiscal or mental handicaps simply need a helping hand. Every child born in the Commonwealth is the responsibility of all citizens and should be treated as such. The needs of soldiers, veterans and their families area priority, not an afterthought. And you do not ask your neighbor for their checkbook when their house is on fire. We have a social safety net because there is evil and misfortune in the world, and we all need protection.
And the proof is in the pudding. The worst economic meltdown since the Great Depression was caused by failed GOP practices like deregulation, privatization and tax breaks for good old boy corporate buddies. The progressive economic policies of the Patrick Administration are leading Massachusetts out of the recession ahead of all the other states. Massachusetts posted 19K new jobs created in July. That number counts for 25% of the total number of jobs created in the country! Click Here Did I mention that Massachusetts is the only industrialized state to keep its triple A Bond rating?
If you believe in the citizen approach to government, now is the time to stand up and say so!

And yes, “pay as you go” means no guardian ad litems, no access to justice for those without money, only folks who can afford paved roads privately, get them. Close Fernald, without making sure everyone who depends on it will be okay; after all, private vendors will always pick up the slack, even if per diems are cut yearly while costs keep going up, right? And those who take care of the vulnerable don’t deserve pensions or living wages; after all, if they could they would be doing something better.
<
p>For some reason, I do not long for those “good old days” and do not understand those who do.
<
p>On the other hand, I do not see the truly vulnerable getting the priority protection I think they should, while the corporate giveaway candy store is doing just fine.
<
p>Not that I don’t think the “corporate giveaway candy store” would have even more fancy goodies on the shelves under Baker or Cahill based on their track record.
<
p>So best of show will have to do.

One is the rhetoric of the Governor’s campaign and one is his practice in office?
<
p>I would have said the candidates or the electorate have two different views, myself, but perhaps he addressing the schizophrenia within the Adminstration.
