Though we should not overemphasize what it means. Do the math:
$250 million for 1 million schoolkids over 180 days = $1.44 per student per day… if we receive all the money that was on offer and if we receive it in one year.
Also, we threw away our nation-leading standards to get the money, which was part of a $90 billion investment in education reform over 17 years. All over board for $250 million in one-time money.
He’s wrong about the framework changes. They are almost completely irrelevant because it’s the MCAS test, which covers a small, mostly predictable fraction of those frameworks, that drives learning in the classroom.
The RTT money will also be spent increments much larger than $1.44 a day per student. It’s a statistic that clarifies nothing.
I don’t agree with the President’s education policy, but it’s the best we can expect from a bad plan. It’s also another feather in the Governor’s cap.
