We often talk about capitalist America. When you go to the library, look at the old newspapers you can come away with a different perspective. You might get the idea that people were allowed to start businesses, acquire capital and had the same entry and exit rules. Until the businessmen (corporatists) acquired enough capital to purchase the right politicians.
With the control of markets the the government and corporatists were able set standards that allowed little competition, tight wages and enormous profit. An aristocracy of wealth dominated America. Built on the backs of the people and aided and abetted by government.
Until 1929. Hell broke loose.
The economic ruin caused by corporatists and their politicians led to a decision by some in the Democratic Party to cut back on the corporate control. This led to the rise of the middle class that could share in the economic bounty and lasted until about 1980.
The corporatists first thought of a coup to maintain their absolute control. That failed they waited and asked President Eisenhower to go back to pre-1930s America. He told them they were crazy.
With President Reagan and every president thereafter they had their men. And all but a small handful in congress. Laws passed erased the gains of the FDR administration. Our government spends millions to train foreign workers so that American companies don’t have to hire American workers. American taxes and debt bail out the incompetent financial institutions. We’re going back, to pre-1930s.
We go along. We have no choice in politics. Is this the Democratic Party we want? Do we want a choice? Will we vote for a change in November or play a little musical chairs?
