At least 38 House Democrats have now come out publicly in favor of at least a short-term extension of current income tax rates for couples earning more than $250,000 and individuals over the $200,000 threshhold…
Tax the rich? Nah. It’s an election year! These people have a will of tapioca.

will result in permanent tax cuts for the wealthy next year should the republicans take control, and perhaps even if the dems retain control, since the blue dogs seem to have all of the power.
<
p>Prepare yourselves. What will our state government cut in next years budget to compensate for the extra cash being hoarded in the top two’s bank accounts? How many more statewide taxes and fees will need to be raised?
<
p>If the Democrats aren’t middle class advocates, and Republicans aren’t middle class advocates, then who is?

…taxing people who make a lot of money helps… the middle class ?
<
p>yea right. Maybe Krugman could figure a way to argue it but you sure haven’t.
<
p>Imagining that cash being “hoarded” is missing from the public trust, how despicable. How much of your cash is being hoarded? I declare it missing!
<
p>Bankrupt? Ahh, you poor saint.
<
p>Look don’t project your own envy on the middle class, liveandletlive.
liveandletlive says
everytime I try to hoard some cash my utility bill or health care bill goes up. Those particular corporations are happy to take my cash and then hoard it for their own purposes.
<
p>I do not envy the wealthy. I wouldn’t even give rich people a second thought except for the fact that their constant cries for lower taxes means that mine will go up. Why is it inherently wrong for me to want to keep more of my cash. Is that something only the wealthy are able to fight for?
<
p>I am not envious of the exhorbitant corporate profits. I am livid about it. I would not want that type of cash because it is taken at the expense of the well being of others; I could not live happily that way. I do not live in the clouds or in a vacuum away from the masses of people. I live in a community. When my community is healthy and successful, then so am I. I would rather be in a healthy, successful, supportive community with an average amount of money than live isolated in a vacuum or in the clouds with a ton of money.
<
p>There is nothing about having large sums of money to be envious about. It appears to me to be a shallow isolated life. What I miss and pine for is a robust, happy, modestly prosperous working middle class.
<
p>I’m not bankrupt, yet. Who knows what the future holds.
One more 12% increase in healthcare costs just might do the trick.

On the one hand, you are complaining that the extension of the Bush tax cuts to the wealthy will cripple the federal and state governments. The cost of extending the tax cut to the wealthy is estimated to be around $700 billion over ten years.
<
p>Oh, those irresponsible Republicans!
<
p>But the “middle class” portion of those tax cuts– which Democrats are so anxious to extend– will cost $3 trillion over that same decade.
<
p>What will our state government cut in next years budget to compensate for that?
liveandletlive says
Tax cuts for the middle class, the drivers of the economy, will increase or at least maintain discretionary spending, drive demand for products and services which will then create the need for new jobs. Then, those new jobs will reduce unemployement and increase revenue which will offset the cost of the tax cut.
<
p>Sounds good to me.
centralmassdad says
Fair enough. But that clearly casts “Irresponsible GOP wants tax cut for the rich that will cripple the government” into its proper light, which is that it is BS.
kirth says
The GOP does support continuing the tax breaks the rich have been enjoying. Are you saying continuing those tax breaks is not going to have a bad effect on government funding?

I’m saying that making this argument while pushing for a far larger expenditure drains the argument of all force. It is like one spouse blaming the other for spending too much on groceries, and then going out to dinner at No. 9 Park.
