Martha, Martha, Martha if only you had been more transparent about your campaign tax issues last year.
Today’s Globe contains more revelations about campaigns not paying their state taxes on interest earnings. http://www.boston.com/news/loc… Lt. Governor Murray and Worcester County Sheriff and Auditor hopeful Glodis join Treasurer and Governor hopeful Cahill in being identified as having campaigns that did not pay state taxes on interest earnings.
But what could have been! Within the story is this additional revelation:
State and federal income tax laws have previously tripped up Attorney General Martha Coakley. Her campaign staff disclosed yesterday that it had discovered in 2009 that it had failed to pay taxes on her political committee’s investments at Fidelity from 2006 and 2008. The campaign paid those back taxes – $17,074.92 to the federal government and $2,669.70 to the state – in 2009 but never disclosed doing so.
Is this story a lesson in candidates and campaigns needing to keep a better handle on their finances or about continued lack of transparency from our Attorney General? I think I can name three campaigns that wished Martha had been more forthcoming in 2009.
