It is a matter of personal frustration to watch the unfolding of events in Egypt and the approach of news sources. There is a constant search for carnage and heroes with only a sprinkling of under emphasized insight into the process to deal with the chaos on the ground. The adults seem to be missing in action.
It is clear the people of Egypt have had it with their present government but lack the political tools to ensure transition to a more desired government.
It is already past time(imho) to call on the resources of the UN and mobilize Egypt’s military(reasonably trusted by Egyptians) to form a very limited interim role under that international body’s oversight. With some security, the UN could play its expert role in assisting political party formation, voting rules, oversight and monitoring functions of any interim government.
If there are political entities ready to govern in that country it has not been highlighted by any 24/7 news organization. If they do exist I have seen little of it. The only party emphasized is the Islamic Brotherhood again falling into the modus operandi of news organization’s approach to scare rather than inform.
It would not hurt for citizens to flood the White House to push the President to take this road before more lives are lost needlessly. He should get Mubarak on the horn and coerce him to take his country’s situation to the Security Council and ask for their help. Letting this problem fester with lesser solutions will saddle the world with problems that will be very hard to undo.
