Today’s GOP would have us believe that someone somewhere will volunteer to feed the hungry, care for the sick, and ensure jobs for our children and their future. This is magical thinking, and in fact the reason for the decline of income and quality of life for most Americans.
Unfortunately, too many would rather dream of entering the elite then care about their brothers, and like Cain, will declare: “Am I my brother’s keeper?”
It may well be that the essential difference between the GOP and being a Democrat is that the core value of the Democratic Party has always been that in fact, we – in the form of government – ARE our brother’s keepers and responsible for one another.
For that reason, I and others will be watching carefully to see if what I view as a dangerous cut to social security – the 2% reduction – is indeed temporary. If that cut is NOT temporary, then the Democratic Party has lost its way.

You mean the GOP is NOT the party that bases its philosophy and practice on Biblically-based Christian principles? I’m shocked! I had heard differently:)

Are we talking about the Massachusetts governor who wants to send developmentally disabled citizens to group residences to further enrich his large campaign contributors? Or the governor who wants to waste $300 million dollars on a facility he wants to close? Worcester State Hospital. Or the governor who wants to eliminate $15 million in Personal Care Attendant services? Thus sending these people into nursing homes at a Medicare cost of $356 a day? Lets see: $30-50 a day for citizens to live independently? Or $356 a day for medicare expenditures? Your call.

No, we’re…actually not talking about the governor of Massachusetts. Pretty sure nobody mentioned him.

p>Now, assuming “horse hockey” is an exclamation of derision and not an exciting, if impractical, new sport that you’ve invented: I don’t quite think that’s warranted. The poster isn’t saying that the Democrats are exactly champions of the poor. At the end, in fact, she implies the opposite.

“What you do for the least of these, you do for ME” – but the corporatist mentality seems to me to be in high ascendancy in Washington.

p>As Billxi/Millbury Man well knows I champion the reality that without the commitment of those who control the purse strings to in fact provide infrastructure and caring for the vulnerable, people die.

p>I have been the sole poster about deaths in our prisons, the suicide epidemic which I personally believe is a direct result of the reduction of clinical services in prisons, the fact that 60% or more of inmates have severe mental health disorders, and are in prisons because prisons have become today’s sole repository of those too behaviorally disordered to safely reside in society.
<
p>It may well be that the horror in Tucson is more a result of the reduction and stigmatization of mental health care given the appearance and history of mental illness of the shooter then the reality that more folks own guns in America then in allegedly trigger happy Yemen.
