News notes from here and there.
- Herald sports columnist Steve Buckley announced that he’s gay in his column today. Kudos to him – it can’t have been all that easy, since he works in the hyper-masculinized world of pro sports where being gay is still something that isn’t talked about very much. I took a brief tour through the more than 500 comments that have appeared on Buckley’s column. Most of them are quite supportive, though there are more than a few that have been removed by the Herald because they “did not follow our guidelines.” His announcement has been widely picked up – the Globe, HuffPo, AOL News, the NY Daily News, and other news outlets have all noted it.
- President Obama’s new chief of staff is William Daley, brother of the outgoing Chicago mayor, senior executive at JPMorgan Chase, and former Clinton commerce secretary. Daley has strongly advocated plotting a “more moderate, centrist course,” and has criticized “left-wing bloggers” who aren’t enamored of that idea. So … we’ll see, I guess. Here’s hoping that his first public appearance goes better than this one did (that’s him standing behind Bill Richardson).
- I was saddened to learn that former Governor Paul Cellucci has been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. I worked for, like, and admire Governor Cellucci. He is apparently still enjoying a good quality of life, and I hope that continues for many years to come.

Good for Buckley. Though it took me about 5 minutes to figure out what the h-ll they were talking about when I tuned into the Big Show on ‘EEI today.

p>I maintain that I trust Terry Murray more than any other person in the State House. Tim Murray comes in a close second. I want Steve Grossman to be my governor.
<
p>My cynical side believes that the media adoringly hype up big lottery winners for the same reason that the Ministry of Truth hyped lottery winners in 1984. That book should be required reading for Americans. For a more interesting lottery story, look north of the border.

p>Republicans can vote in Congress, even if they’re not Congressmen yet, apparently. These guys are a circus act.
<
p>Rex Ryan is an idiot. I imagine after he retires, he’ll run for Congress as a Republican in a safe district. And get elected.
<
p>Strange how the same blonde in the BMG ads is a working Mom with a secret, and investigative reporter who loves the acai berry, and can tell me how to get a cheap iPod touch. What a career she’s got going.

You know, that’s really not a bad list at all. We may have more in common than I thought, sab. đŸ™‚

p>Terry Murray is my never-gonna-happen US Senate choice. I don’t think she’s got the media-friendly warmth that’s necessary to get elected … but she’d be a badass US Senator.

-Daley a solid choice, Richardson would’ve been better

p>-Buckley has always been an engaging and witty sports writer and I don’t think this will change much of anything, the homophobes were long removed from WEEI and the Herald’s sports pages are fairly apolitical. Buckley is a great philanthropist as any Cantabridgian who enjoys the Old Tyme Baseball game would know and was instrumental in helping a buddy of mine get a sports writing gig and encouraging his growth as a writer, always willing to help a neighbor. A classy guy and a very classy way to come out, its too unfortunate it took him so long and hopefully this won’t cause him any trouble
<
p>-Cellucci was one of the nicest politicians I have ever met and a decent governor of the state, sad to hear the news and hopefully he and his family can adjust and things work out for him

p>(Ditto on Cellucci…first met him when he was running for LG at the home of a mutual friend in Yarmouth. Sweet, kind real person).
