Newt Gingrich is in. Really, what more need be said?
Has there been a presidential election in recent memory that was not seriously contested? Bill Clinton vs. Bob Dole is about the closest I can think of. But unless something dramatic happens in the GOP field, 2012 is going to put that election to shame. ‘Cause this is just sad.

I don’t mean in terms of the result. Obviously, Reagan vs. Mondale (for example) was a blowout, and we won’t see anything like that again for some time. What I’m talking about, though, is in terms of the party out of power not even putting forth a serious candidate.

Bob Dole was the candidate because it was his turn. He was a longtime senator with widespread policy experience — sacrificial perhaps, but he was in no way an unserious candidate. Matter of fact, there were ten candidates, including five sitting Congressmen, one former and one current governor in the field. Sure in retrospect, it seemed Clinton’s to lose (particularly with Perot unsettling the field), and there was strong desperation from the Dole campaign as October ended.
I wonder if in a couple decades, the same will be said about 2008. Would that be accurate?

The Republican party is totally out of touch with reality at this point, so it is not at all surprising to find that they have produced no candidates with any appeal outside of the party. Republicans have been so busy chugging their kool-aid, and catering to their base, that they cannot even comprehend that most Americans do not actually think the way they do.
In any case, I am salivating over the prospect of Trump entering the fray. And is it too much to ask that Palin give it a go?

were to run for President, he’d be pilloried in every major media outlet around for his marital indiscretions and his treatment of Elizabeth, and rightfully so.
But Newt gets a pass? Why?
(BTW, David – I noticed you’re singing the Verdi this weekend – break a leg!)
David Whelan says
And has he gotten a pass yet or is he about to get crucified for his “sins of the past?”
Steve Stein says
1. Hillary stayed
2. He’s not running for anything ever again.
Steve Stein says
he didn’t dump Hillary. While she was dying from cancer.

He was acting out of devotion to his country.
His adultery, as he has explained, was the consequence of extreme patriotism acting on his work ethic and his libido:
“There’s no question, at times in my life, partially driven by how passionately I felt about this country, that I worked far too hard and things happened in my life that were not appropriate.”
What’s not believable about that?
David Whelan says
Newt won’t get my vote but he has the ability to take the conversation to a better place and for that reason I welcome him to the race.
Chris Christie is the guy!

… who’s not running. 😀

Newt wholeheartedly endorsed this theory. He went on TV to crow about it.

The only candidate I’m scared about is Jon Hunstmen because he is even more post-partisan than Obama and can appeal to independents while salvaging the remnants of the Reagan coalition. Daniels, I suspect, could also do decently though he is a huge foreign policy lightweight. What is most interesting about this election is that foreign policy and national security swing to Obama’s side. Social issues will also take a back burner and it will be the economy stupid. The odd thing is the Republican’s should be picking a much better candidate considering the economic indicators are not getting any better and if unemployment is around 10% the incumbent always loses. But this time around the alternative will just be so much worse. The GOP unwisely changed their primaries, which were stacked last time around to ensure a speedy primary behind an early frontrunner. Now that they have adopted DNC style proportional apportionment instead of winner take all, it could produce a fractured convention and an extreme nominee.

Isn’t he THIS administration’s Ambassador to China? If I have to think for a minute to remember who he is I’m thinking snowball in Hell.
