It’s pretty much like clockwork to see a post about the Sox, Celtics, or Pats when they get deep into the playoffs, but apparently not so with the Boston Bruins. Are there any fans here? I guess it’s just like in general: Hockey is the ugly sibling of the other major sports, even in an Original Six town.
I’m not a Bruins fan, but I am a huge hockey fan. My team is the Detroit Red Wings, who got knocked out in the second round by Joe Thornton (remember him?) and the San Jose Sharks. I was bummed until I realized that between appearances in the Eastern Conference final by the Bruins, the Wings had been in eight Western Conference finals, won six of those, and went on to lift the Cup four times. I’m not rubbing that in… Yes I am. đŸ˜‰
Anyway, I’m happy to see both an Original Six team and a Canadian team in the final. If the Bruins pull it off, that’s three out of the last four for the O6, Among those teams, the Bruins’ Cup drought (1972) is only surpassed by the Toronto Maple Leafs, who haven’t won since 1967. The last Canadian champions were (of course) the Canadians in ’93.
Here’s to an entertaining series! I only wish it was starting earlier.

I’ll admit that the last game was tough, for a non-hockey fan like me, its really hard to watch a game for so long without a score. It’s admittedly a problem with soccer as well. That said I am always a Boston fan, my brother and good friends are diehard Bruins fans, and I have to say this is probably our most consistently loyal and knowledgeable fan base-there will never be a pink hat at the ole’ Gahden. It was a great series and I expect a challenging and hard series against the Canucks, but I am confident we can beat them.

It’s not even the finals and the late news talked about nothing else, even cutting into programming to cover self-congratulatory press conferences live. Channel 5 even had several reporters at different spots outside the Garden saying essentially the same thing. Here’s my report – “Bruins won, fans happy” – Next case!

interrupted regular broadcasting just afternoon, with a flashing, “important new bulletin”. I thought something serious had occurred. Instead, the “important new bulletin” was to report on the departure of the Bruins from the Garden for Vancouver. It was complete with like remote interviews, long shots from the news copter, and breathless cheerleading and shots of cheering fans. Don’t get me wrong, I follow the team. I go back to the pre Bobby Orr days, but get a life already. When I saw “Breaking News”, I thought of something serious like Sal DiMasi getting a plea deal, or a terrorist attack, not this nonsense. Have some sense of proportion.

So what if hockey dominates the coverage for a couple of days. Most local news broadcasts are dominated by stories that are included for the titillation factor: car accidents, house fires, murders, the latest juicy court case, etc. There is very little political coverage and very little worthwhile investigative reporting on local TV these days.

Maybe because municipal, county, and state politics are more interesting and changing in Chicago, but out here the local News focuses on much more substantial stories than the nightly crime reports in Boston. After Natalie Jacobson and Randy Price left the big three outlets, they all followed the Fox News model of sensationalism. Greater Boston is still a fantastic show, even if Emily Rooney is a bit biased and sometimes bored with the position.
