The tragic news, as reported by the NYT:
The real estate mogul and reality television host is not going to run for president, he said Monday, ending months of over-the-top speculation that he might seek the 2012 Republican nomination.
“After considerable deliberation and reflection, I have decided not to pursue the presidency,” he said in a statement.
But, fortunately, Trump has not lost his flair for the comedic:
“I maintain the strong conviction that if I were to run, I would be able to win the primary and ultimately, the general election,” Mr. Trumps said, adding that “Ultimately, however, business is my greatest passion and I am not ready to leave the private sector.”
Hilarious. Of course, the best possible business move is to become president, and immediately declare yourself a one-termer so that you can act with complete freedom from worrying about reelection for your entire four years. Then, only four years later, you can do, almost literally, whatever you want, in business or anywhere else. Therefore, Trump is obviously fibbing. Instead, he knows what everybody else knows: he hadn’t a snowball’s chance in hell of winning.
Anyway, the harm Trump’s withdrawal does to the Democratic party is considerable, since it removes the GOP’s buffoon-in-chief from the daily headlines. Fortunately, Newt Gingrich seems determined to pick up the slack, as he’s been caught in not one but two major flip-flops in a matter of days. And there’s always Michelle Bachmann!
