Hull Democrat, Steve May has filed the papers necessary to run for the Plymouth and Norfolk Senate Seat with the Office of Campaign and Political Finance. May is the Executive Director of the Forum on Genetic Equity, a non-profit organization addressing genetic discrimination and privacy issues.
When asked about his campaign May replied: “For too long, the people of the South Shore have been denied a seat at the table; whether discussing, local aid, transportation funding or education dollars the people of this district have been underserved. When you compare Hedlund’s ability to deliver to members of the State Senate with similar seniority he falls well short.” May continued: “By any standard Bob Hedlund’s leadership has been inept. Every important decision made in the last several years has been made in the Senate Caucus room, we don’t have a seat at the table—not being present has real consequences for us and we don’t have the luxury of not being at the table in these times…”
Previous to his work at the Forum, May has worked in a variety of capacities at the state level, having served as National Director of State Affairs for the Hemophilia Federation of America, a Political Action Committee (PAC) Director for the National Association of Social Workers, and a Legislative Fellow in the New York State Senate in the aftermath of the 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center.
In addition to May’s past public policy experiences, he also is a clinical social worker having worked in community mental health and substance abuse. May has a Master’s degree in Social Work at the University of Vermont and a Master’s degree in Political Science from the University of Rhode Island.
Locally, May is a member of the Hull Transportation Committee, an alternate to the Hull Historic District Commission, Secretary of the Hull Democratic Town Committee, and Hull’s Representative to the South Shore Democratic Caucus. In addition, May is a member of Office and Professional Employees International Union, Local 49, the Clinical Social Work Guild of America, the National Association of Social Workers and the American Society of Association Executives.

This will be the first time a Democrat will have challenged State Senator Hedlund in 8 years.
Hedlund certainly works hard, just not for us. He works for his restaurant, he hosts his radio show, he works as a consultant, he plays softball, he plays in a rock band, he plays on facebook during the workday… Being the state senator for the Plymouth and Norfolk district seems to fall somewhere low on his list – he seems to only use it as a way to get on Fox 25.
Steve – Please ask him how he justifies the extra $10k+ he receives for being Assistant Minority leader. Most people don’t need high-paid assistants when their caucus has four members. Do two of them really need to be Minority leader and Assistant minority leader to lead the other two?
And while I definitely agree its a porkish perk in a caucus that small, arguably should any leader get any extra pay at tax payers expense?
