I called Kerry’s, Brown’s, and Frank’s offices today to express my displeasure with the brewing cuts to Social Security. It took five minutes while I was driving to work, and I felt like I did my civic duty for the day. These cuts, as far as I can tell, are purely to keep historically-low taxes on the wealthiest.
Did you know that Obama’s commission voted to recommend an eventual 22% cut in benefits? I can’t afford that.
Kerry’s office said he’s against any cuts whatsoever.
Brown’s office said he’s in favor of strengthening Social Security, and helpfully reminded me that he voted against Ryan’s Medicare plan. When I asked if “strengthening” means he’d oppose raising the retirement age or adjusting COLA increases, the person on the phone couldn’t answer. I think that *I* know the answer.
Barney’s office said he was against any cuts as well, and took my name and email address, presumably for follow up.
