“I consider Alan a good friend and I commend him on a campaign that has engaged so many Massachusetts voters on so many of the important challenges we face as a state and a nation. I look forward to working with Alan and others to win this seat and maintain a Democratic majority in the United States Senate.
Politics can be unpredictable. No one could have guessed two months ago that three strong candidates in this race would have dropped out by now. The Democratic primary is more than 10 months away. I believe, and many others do too, that the Democratic Party and the people of Massachusetts will benefit from a competitive primary.
As President Obama continues admirably to push forward to create new jobs, it becomes even clearer that we need to replace Scott Brown with a U.S. Senator who will support the President’s efforts to strengthen our economy. To this end, I remain optimistic that the people of Massachusetts will want a Democratic nominee who:
– is a successful campaigner who has defeated an incumbent Republican;
– has a record of service and accomplishment in Massachusetts on the serious challenges we face here in the Commonwealth and across the nation;
– appeals to both Democrats and independents who want a candidate capable of defeating Scott Brown;
– has worked in the private, public and non-profit sectors, who knows how the economy works and knows how jobs are created.
I look forward to continuing to share my record of accomplishments with voters and demonstrate why I am the best candidate to defeat Scott Brown and win this election next November.”
