Where is the courage from the leadership of political parties and elected officials as to “The Super Committee”, Citizens United, and the looting of the United States, and the fascist drift under the Patriot Acts?
While Bernie Sanders (don’t you wish there were 99 Senators with Bernie Sanders integrity and courage?) and Dennis Kucinich are, in fact, voices of courage and passion, and are speaking out as they have also done all their lives. Of course, I can find statements and acts to like or to dislike – but personal courage and a willingness to speak out and lead from the front is part of what attracts me to to spend my time and resources for a candidate.
However, no elected leaders, at least as far as I know, have gone and marched along side the Occupy the Highway patriots.
No group of elected leaders has spoken out or taken actions to “lead from the front”, as far as I know to protect the students and other occupiers who are being beaten and pepper sprayed for non-violent protests.
For all these reasons I thank the Council of Elders because they are doing what they have done all their lives, speaking truth to power.
Tomorrows leaders are likely to be rising through the ranks of those willing to step forward, step up, and fight the fascist culture of the all too aptly named Homeland Security agency – folks, Homeland Security is not about keeping you and I safe, not really, it is about control and not at all about our Democratic values or the heritage of democracy and government “of, by, and for the people” – maybe it is time for us all to reread The Gettysburg Address, and think about who we once were – and who we want to be as Americans.
Today, as in the day of General Smedley Butler the forces of reaction and plutocracy are poised to fully own the United States of America while leaving superficial patriotic trappings in place. For anyone who has not read The Plot to Seize the White House and how General Butler foiled it – now might just be a good time.
