Mandatory sentencing ties the hands of judges. Mandatory sentencing has disparate impact on minorities – as of today, one African American in three can expect to do time in jails and prisons. Failure to fund education, and spending more to lock people up then to insure a productive population is ultimately NOT sustainable. If you work in the area, or can take that day off, join Occupy the Hood, Aid to Incarcerated Mothers, the American Civil Liberties Union, Arlington Street Church and others and say “NO” – enough – the lock up philosophy is just not working.
