Republican Scott Brown is ducking the highest-profile TV debates. It’s a perfectly valid question to ask why he won’t defend his record to the people of Massachusetts in these high-profile forums.

That Brown accepted and attended a debate sponsored by the EMK Institute and was OK with Kennedy endorsing Coakley back then. The only thing that seems to have changed is that Brown is an incumbent and doesn’t want to actually talk about his record. Not here, not at town halls, not anywhere.

His record is in step with the 13 percent of the electorate that are Republicans, and vastly out of step with the 87 percent of Massachusetts voters who are not. His behavior isn’t weird, it is typical of a second-generation professional politician who knows how the game of insider baseball is played.
