Updated: At David’s request, I added an iframe embed to this thread-starter and posted it without previewing. As you can see below, it doesn’t seem to work.
It seems that the standard youtube embed html is now an iframe. That iframe is not supported by the wordpress code we use. The youtube videos used to provide an embed tag that worked fine, but I don’t see how to get that now.
Since the editors (and apparently some of us) are still able to embed videos (such as in this comment and this diary, the capability still exists. Can someone please post the steps for doing so?
Here’s an iframe embed in the thread-starter, to see if this part works differently from the comments.
This follows the iframe.
Interestingly, I notice that the iframe code is apparently being stripped out. I click “Edit Post” and paste the iframe HTML. It’s there when I click the “Update” button, but no embed appears on the published version. When I again click the “Edit Post” button, the iframe code is missing from the HTML source.
If you want to embed a video in a post, whether using an iFrame or other code, be sure you are using the “HTML Editor” rather than the “Visual Editor” – you can toggle back and forth between the two using the tabs at the upper right-hand corner of the text box. Embed codes will not work in the visual editor.
Also, the “old embed code” is still available on YouTube – there’s a checkbox on the screen that brings it up. But you shouldn’t need it.
Comments don’t use a visual editor, so it should be possible to embed video. I will do some testing to be sure it’s working.
I always use the html editor (I find it more convenient to just type the html than guess at what the video editor will insert). When I’ve tried to use the iframe tag, it works in the preview but fails when posted.
I’m pasting the (iframe) embed html for the Elizabeth Warren video I reference on another comment below.
This paragraph follows the embedded iframe.
In my browser (Firefox 14.0.1 on Windows 7/Professional), there’s no embed above.
Can you see it?
I just pasted the iframe code into the comment box. I’m on a Mac using Chrome. Not sure why that would matter. I’ll ask our tech guy to look into it.
that maybe “preview” is the problem. Try writing a post in the HTML editor and just publish it rather than previewing first. (You can always go back in and edit it if you find mistakes.)
I’ll try posting without previewing. I won’t be astonished if we’re seeing a difference between Windows and the Mac, though. Somehow, stuff on the Mac generally seems to just work, whereas stuff on Windows doesn’t.
This paragraph follows the iframe, and I have not previewed it.
So at the moment, it would seem that the iframe tags don’t work under Windows.
BTW, do you mean that comment editing is working now?
not a comment. You can’t edit comments, and we don’t have immediate plans for that to change.
Try creating a user post without previewing it and see if the video embed works. I’ll ask our tech guy about video in the comments – not sure why I can do it but you can’t.
Maybe you can. The edit button doesn’t work for me, and it never has. This is what I get every time I click Edit:
Another empty promise.
See above.
Just trying to nail down why somervilletom can’t get video to show up in the comments.
I had trouble a while back as well. This time I took the regular default embed youtube code and just put it in.
Not sure what’s different this time. I’ll try and replicate the success to see if it was a fluke.
(see below).
The strange thing is that at the time I submit and the page refreshes, my comment doesn’t show the video but shows the correct amount of ‘vertical space’ that the video would take up. I refresh again and the video shows up fine.
Here’s an iframe embed from chrome on my Windows 7 box:
This line follows the embed.
Oh well.
I guess I’ll see if I can find the button that makes youtube provide the old-fashioned embed tab.
… I clicked “Share” then “Embed” then copied the code onto the clipboard and pasted it into the BMG comment.
