“Enough!”
On Sunday members of the 300 person strong Newton Democratic City Committee came together and condemned Republican voter suppression tactics. The Committee urges all local organizations to speak out loudly and decry the unjust, undemocratic attempts by the Republican party to undermine our system of government for their own gain.
Let it be known where you stand!
A Resolution condemning voter suppression laws, which have been ignored by Mitt Romney and appallingly championed by Senator Scott Brown and national Republicans, was adopted during a meeting of the NDCC at Newton North High School on Sunday, September 23. The resolution was written by lawyer, activist and Newton Ward 8 Democratic Committee member Frank Wolpe.
It was agreed that Republican voter suppression efforts:
- Chip away at our American values, including the core value of inclusiveness;
- Represent the first painful rollback in voting rights since the Jim Crow era, with such voter-ID laws deliberately disenfranchising and cherry picking voters;
- Depict eligible voters as ineligible second-class citizens, undeniably-targeting minorities, young people, elderly, and poor people for no other reason than politics;
- Make it ever so obvious that that our nation has never solved anything with less democracy especially after so many gallant Americans have fought, struggled, and died to protect and expand voting rights; and
- Kindle a potential political and constitutional crisis because Republicans have embarked on an effort to rig an American Presidential election.
And remember, Scott Brown became enraged when he learned people on welfare in Massachusetts were mailed voter registration forms.
When he did, Brown kicked dirt on the real world of hard-fought-for and harder-won democracy, where everyone should be given a chance to have a voice in their very own government. That’s the way our Democracy works. How can it be any other way? In Scott Brown’s alternate world, poor people shouldn’t be allowed to vote because Brown worries they won’t vote his way.
Scott Brown is not on the side of democracy; he’ll undermine basic rights of Massachusetts citizens to stop people from voting against him.
Let’s send him packing; Elizabeth Warren for Senate!
