No, not our own Sean O’Malley. Jorge Mario Cardinal Bergoglio, Archbishop of Buenos Aires, has accepted his election to the Papacy under the name of Francis I. He is the first Jesuit Pope and also the first Pope from the New World. While I don’t expect radical changes I think both of these firsts have the potential of bringing a fresh perspective. He was reported a strong candidate the last time around.

But yes, a 76 year old social conservative does not seem a huge departure from Benedict XVI, but first Jesuit and first Pope Francis are good signs. I was hoping for Sandri, Aziz, Schonborn, or our own Sean but I can live with this pope. A strong commitment to social and economic justice, strong critic of globalization, and hopefully someone who will root out the filth and corruption in the Curia and abusing cardinals. We shall see
