Last week Anthony Lewis spoke concerning – and concerningly – about the dilution of legal representation to the indigent. Today he has died, and the world has lost a voice for the rule of law – because Lewis knows that without access to justice for all, the “rule of law” is an illusion. It is time for me to light another candle in my kitchen – and for all of us to remember an extraordinary life and to recommit to the cause of justice – because without equal protection under the law from access to justice, neither law nor mercy will long survive. Excellent OpEd about Anthony Lewis in the Boston Herald today.
