My regular Thursday night routine is to write the Democratic Dispatch. As I was reviewing my e-mail for information to include, it reminded me of the emotions of this week; I was thinking about what I should say to readers. And then I started hearing about the unfolding deadly situation in Cambridge, Boston and Watertown.
I had been thinking about Governor Patrick’s remarks on Thursday morning. ‘And just as we cannot permit darkness and hate to triumph over our spiritual faith, so we must not permit darkness and hate to triumph over our civic faith. That cannot happen. And it will not.’ We have a primary election on the 30th. Our civic life continues. As I was going into the evening, with Thursday’s service giving us a bit of closure, people seemed to be easing back into life’s routines. On Thursday it was announced that the Democratic candidates plan to resume campaigning Saturday. Now we have what appears to be a related situation still unfolding as I write.
As we go into the weekend, keep community in mind. Spend some time with political colleagues. As activists and friends, take some time to heal together. Ironically, last week I wrote about celebrating activism, friendship and fun. While this is not the time for celebration, it is time for community. Support each other and spend time together at appropriate activities.
