Gabriel Gomez is Just a Mitt Romney Re-Tread

May 6, 2013 By mathelman

You tell me.

Republican
Mitt Romney

Republican
Gabriel Gomez

Harvard MBA led to career in private equity that hasn’t received nearly as much scrutiny as it deserves
Played both sides of the abortion issue Yup. “Gomez said he is pro-life, but would not attempt to change Roe v. Wade, the landmark U.S. Supreme Court case legalizing abortion.”
Changes his positions on issues based on the audience he is addressing Hall of Fame Flip-Flopper Have you read Gomez’s letter to Governor Patrick? (PDF)
Has Karl Rove-wannabe Eric Fehrnstrom cheering him on from the sidelines Fehrnstrom advised the pro-Gomez super-PAC “Committee for a Better Massachusetts”
Trying hard to convince the right-wing GOP base that he is shoulder-to-shoulder with them “I was a severely conservative Republican Governor” “I’m a firm Republican, I’m a conservative Republican”
Dishonest criticism of President Obama’s response to terrorism Please proceed, Governor.
Everywhere and nowhere on climate science Uh-huh. Uh-huh.
Relying on outside groups to do their dirty work “Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney was supported by outside groups that outspent allies of President Barack Obama by $260 million. And yet he still lost.” “GOP Senate hopeful Gabriel Gomez rejects ‘people’s pledge’”
Nothing says “common touch” like the swanky upgrades to their chateaus Quadrupling the size of his house, installing a car elevator, you get the picture Boston Globe Magazine profiled the redecoration of his 6,500-square-foot Cohasset Common estate

Some people may suggest a Gabriel Gomez-Scott Brown comparison; but, at Gomez’s core, he really is just a Mitt Romney re-tread.

Don’t know the accuracy or the source, but someone on Daily Kos has posted a chart saying Gomez’s private equity company invested 5% of its money in America and 90% in creating jobs overseas. I know we had the post about Lululemon, which would be an example of that.

I got a kick out of the “specialist in sending American Capitol to other countries.” All in all, that might be a good thing, but Elizabeth Warren won’t know where to go to work!

Politicians like Markey who votes for trade deals, which incentivize corporations/investment capital “specialists” to ship jobs overseas, and people, like yourself, are “shocked”. Why not looked to your vaunted Harvard Univ. endowment investments, much of which (80%) are invested outside the USA. And I don’t mean to be argumentative, just thinking out loud.

This chart is an effective tool, I must admit. However, I would stay away from mentioning homes or remodels. Didn’t Patrick spend a fortune on new drapes for his office and a nice Cadillac, not the used Crown Vic Mitt rode in? Don’t we all like nice things? I wish Markey owned a mansion somewhere in Massachusetts and the property tax that comes with it, not to Chevy Chase, MD. But Gabriel’s letter to Deval raises credibility issues for me. Just say you voted for Obama, hell, I did the first time in the final over McCain (Mitt in the primary). Bill Weld did as well. Just say why, like Palin was not qualified. You will get gain more votes than you will lose.

Lastly, Mitt and Gomez are fine looking dudes, no? That is definitely something they have in common.

You regurgitate the tired Markey <3 Nafta line, that utterly failed your last candidate and bash that librul Harvard while supporting a Harvard graduate who supports even less regulation and less trade protections. Nice one.

Ed is a double eagle, that means he is an Irish boy done good in my book. Enough said.

That on the one hand, people can criticize Gomez for investing in jobs outside the U.S., but not the politicians who encourage and reward this behavior with their past votes. If a referee (politicians) allow or encourage dirty hits and all of a sudden, a soccer game turns into a roller derby, who do you blame?

Let me see if I get this:

Vote Gomez because Deval Patrick spent some money on drapes? But Markey doesn’t buy a plane ticket every single weekend, so vote for Gomez?

Mitt owns homes in New Hampshire, Utah and California so don’t vote for Markey? But Markey owns a 2nd house in Chevy Chase, so vote for Gomez?
