Delaware, the First State, is on the cusp of becoming the 11th state to ratify marriage equality.Minnesota and Illinois are also on the verge of passing this historic victory, though they may have a harder time. We can only hope the Midwest and Mid Atlantic, and someday the whole country, can join our experiment in equality started right here in Massachusetts.

Back in the early 1980’s, when I was in the Marine Corps at Cherry Point NAS, North Carolina, Delaware was nothing but a long stretch of highway to drive through whenever I drove back to New Hampshire. I need to revisit it soon!
…at least for most people using 95. It’s a very short and expensive stretch. Delaware I believe like NH is a sales- and income-tax free state, plus friendly to incorporating business. The politicians there cleverly tolled the Delaware Turnpike (95) and the Delaware Memorial Bridge knowing the vast majority of toll payers were passing through from out of state and thus couldn’t vote for them. If you want the long way through DE I believe that is US 13 coming up from the Chesepeake Bay Bridge Tunnel connecting the Delmarva Peninsula to the Hampton Roads area of Virginia.

Read an article that saw tolling this tiny stretch of 95 as a perfect metaphor for Delaware’s business policies. Here is a state that grabs money by inconveniencing and adding cost to its neighbors, whether by using its interstate as a moneymaker or encouraging a race to the bottom in corporate law. At least they’re getting this one right.
Minnesota votes on Thursday 9 May, but the Illinois House wont’ hold its vote until we have the votes. The force of destiny!
The “making history” and “trailblazer” categories are full. There’s still a little room in the “on the leading edge” and “knew the right thing when we saw it” categories.
In five years, we’ll be down to “following the crowd” and then “living in the past”.
The bill was passed today and the Governor will sign.
