Someone once asked me why people referred to Sec. of State Bill Galvin as “Prince of Darkness” and I told them it was because when Bill was a State Rep. he would gossip about other elected officials and would spread the gossip to select reporters to curry favor for himself with the State House press corps. Old (bad) habits die hard. No reporter has benefitted more from Galvin’s fountain of slur than his pal Howie Carr. I was reminded of that last Sunday when I read Carr’s anti-Markey column.

Tucked neatly in the middle was a vignette about Markey at a Framingham Democratic Comm. event in January.
Supposedly Markey misspoke while introducing the Lt. Gov. calling him Murphy instead of Murray…according to Carr, Markey repeated the mistake over and over during the event. Anyone who was there can attest that that did not happen. Markey corrected himself almost immediately and the Lt. Gov. laughed at the single slip. Clearly, Carr was not there. So he was either lying deliberately or reporting someone else’s misinformation. But, which Democrat would try to weaken his fellow Democrat by passing that put-’em-down to Howie Carr?
I am sorry as a Democrat to say that the enemy is within. There appears to be only one viable suspect. The one Democratic statewide officeholder who has NEVER been vilified, libeled or slandered by Carr…the Prince of Darkness. A best friend with benefits. More than a coincidence that whenever the Prince shows up at a Dem. event that includes statewide officeholders, some form of misinfo./slurry will turn up in a Carr column shortly after to cut them down. The Prince is the common denominator.
And speaking of Carr, I hope every BMGer is following former prosecutor Matt Connolly’s blog on the Whitey Bulger trial…he is a fountain of REAL facts on the courts, press and lawyers…He exposes Howie Carr as the fiction writer he is, pointing out one fantasy after another in Carr’s new book. Take a look:

Carr’s books are based on lies and his columns are based on lies…but he’s laughing all the way to the bank while others pay the price. Please Bill, stop feeding the vermin…he’s laughing at you, too!

…maybe Galvin was supporting Lynch, but will now behave himself since Markey is the nominee. I am actually surprised to hear that Galvin was at this event as I don’t recall seeing him very often at things like this. Of course, as chief elections officer of the state he shoudn’t be openly supporting anyone. In fact if I had my way the Secretary would be elected on a non-partisan ballot.

You wrote:”maybe Galvin was supporting Lynch, but will now behave himself since Markey is the nominee”…..that was funny but i don’t think you mean it to be. Galvin supports Galvin….and has for several decades…he has never been a team player.

Like I said I don’t think someone in his position should be. We don’t need and Katherine Harrises or Ken Blackwells.

Galvin has been in office since the 1970’s and makes Richard Nixon look like a Boy Scout. The fact that he regularly savages fellow Democrats and has consistently blocked efforts by the legislature that make voting more convenient is reason enough for him to get a primary opponent in 2014. It’s just mind boggling that a man who Karl Rove could accurately call “Mini-Me” has gotten a free pass for so long.

Bonifaz had money and a lot of folks here backing him
and he lost, Grace Ross almost got 30% against him
and if the greens put all their eggs in that basket and we helped it could work. Or we can hope the Republicans run somebody decent, I’d vote for Winslow over Galvin myself.

I don’t know the man personally, but have seen him at the convention and other events…but isn’t this a bit untoward – inferring guilt without proof? Slurring someone without basis? Insinuations based on whether Howie Carr ever wrote about him? For all that you accuse Galvin of….this feels a bit like “Pot….meet Kettle” in the Hypocrisy Handbook.”

This guy has been in office for 40 years…he’s earned his reputation. Ask anyone who’s served or worked with him over the span of his 4 decades in office and you will quickly realize how Bill Galvin came to be known as The Prince of Darkness. Bottom line, the man is simply a nasty, untrustworthy public servant and a notorious dime dropper with the media.

Maybe THAT’S why he habitually checks the change slot on the vending machines outside the 4th floor cafeteria in the state house!
