By a landslide vote of 5,320 to 833—86.5 percent to 13.5 percent—Everett voters endorsed a $1.2 billion gambling resort proposal from Las Vegas developer Steve Wynn, who wants to build on vacant industrial land on the Mystic River waterfront.
The vote was the first binding referendum under the 2011 state law that legalized casino gambling in Massachusetts. No project can compete for a coveted casino license unless the voters of the host community approve the proposal at the ballot box.
About 32 percent of the city’s 19,400 voters turned out for the unusual Saturday referendum, according to the city clerk’s office.
Boston and Milford still have to weigh in on whether they will compete for the eastern license. Stay tuned.

Boston residents may just be denied that right because the law singled Boston out so that only people inside the ward needed get a vote. Boston City Councilors running this time around ought to be asked whether everyone in Boston deserves to get a vote.

Bruins lost, and now the whole area will lose with this economic succubus getting built. High crime, high taxes on the poor and vulnerable, won’t fix the problems the city has.

It was not a good day for the greater Beantown crowd.
Boston Red Sox (3) were annihilated by Detroit Tigers (10).
Ugh.

With less than 40 hours left, we all need to help Ed Markey sprint to the finish line.
Stay focused. GOTV.
stomv says
This blog isn’t the DSCC blog. It’s about progressive, reality based politics in Massachusetts. All of it. Not every reader supports Markey, or is willing to GOTV for him. Furthermore, jcconway posted at 1am and heartlanddem at 5am. Should they be knocking on doors or making phone calls at that time?
fenway49 says
For anyone in Massachusetts who cares about progressive politics here and across America, it’s hard to see what is more important in the next day or two than making sure a Massachusetts seat in the Senate doesn’t go to a Republican again. With Frank Lautenberg’s death we’re down to 54-46 Democrats. Gomez would make it 53-47 with a tough, tough cycle coming next year. Plus, should Markey lose the national media is sure to spend the next year beating the drum for a 2014 bloodbath by saying how Obama’s been repudiated by even the most liberal of states due to his “scandals.”
It hardly seems out of line, with about 36 hours left until polls close, to ask people to GOTV on a progressive political blog that itself organized a canvass and promoted it on the front page.
And who here’s not a supporter? Dan? That guy turns off the Bruins five minutes into the first period.
stomv says
but that wasn’t what bluewatch requested. The line “stay focused” seems to me to suggest that we ought only worry about one thing between Sun 9am and Tuesday 8pm.
So, I ask again: between the times of 1:00 am and 5:30 am, should we focus on calling voters or knocking on their doors?
fenway49 says
The 1:00 am and 5:30 am argument is a bit of a red herring. Bluewatch’s comment was not in response to anyone in particular. It was just a general statement that, until 8 PM tomorrow, the Senate election should take precedence over whatever Everett feels like doing with Steve Wynn. I agree with that.
And, hell, jconway’s obviously not going to canvass at 1 am or any other time. He’s in Chicago, busy explaining to people that, yes, Virginia, there will be a Game 7.

I’m terribly disappointed by this…

Foxwoods has set up an office on Main St near town hall, and they’re handing out pro-casino lawn signs. I’ve only seen a few houses with them, while there are hundreds of lawns adorned with Casino Free Milford signs. Public sentiment is running heavily against the casino here!
