You may have heard that El Planeta, the largest Spanish-language newspaper in Massachusetts, has endorsed Ed Markey for Senate. That’s a nice get for Markey. From the endorsement, as translated by Google (for whose accuracy I cannot vouch):
we believe that on the issues that most affect the Latino community in Massachusetts, Edward Markey has shown greater commitment to the defense of them than that exhibited by the Republican candidate, Gabriel Gomez.
But buried in the Globe report on the endorsement is something that struck me as truly bizarre.
Chief editor Ana Julia Jatar said an editorial committee that also included publisher Javier Marin and associate editor Rafael Ulloa examined the candidates’ platforms and performance in the debates in deciding whom to endorse. Jatar said Markey granted an interview, while Gomez did not.
Now hold on a second there – Gomez didn’t grant an interview to the editorial board of El Planeta? He wouldn’t even talk to them??
My goodness. No wonder the GOP has problems reaching non-white voters. You at least have to pretend that you care.

He posted an in-studio photo and this message on Facebook last week: “Great to talk about issues affecting the Latino community on WUNR today.”
I wonder who interviewed him there, and if he knew ahead of time he’d be fed the softball kind of questions that he knew he wouldn’t get at Boston Globe.

oh, wait. I’m not Dan.
I had read that too. Gomez couldn’t spend the time to read the 8 page Blunt amendment, didn’t care enough to talk to the editorial board of the largest Spanish language newspaper in Massachusetts. While Gomez refuses to talk about policies and priorities, his actions give you a pretty clear indication.

When I read the Globe piece this morning, that bit definitely jumped off the page. Talk about burying the lead, Globe folks!

It’s not like the guy doesn’t speak the language.
Or perhaps his Spanish lacks and he didn’t want to be exposed, lol?
