State Senator Karen Spilka (D – Ashland) has announced the grand opening of her campaign office and the kickoff of her campaign for the seat vacated by Ed Markey as he assumes his new duties as Massachusetts’ junior senator. The details:
When: Monday, July 1, 7:00 PM
Where: 303 Worcester Rd, Framingham, MA
RSVP: Facebook Event Page
Karen Spilka has served as a state senator in the Second Middlesex and Norfolk District since 2005, and she was a state rep from 2001 to 2004 before that. Her most recent legislation, the Electronic Privacy Act, will protect our privacy and guarantee that our system of checks and balances applies to our digital lives.
As one of five Democrats who have announced a primary run for the 5th CD, she has an uphill climb – but she’s the only person running from the western end of the district, which may give her a leg up. Will we see you at Monday night’s grand opening? Let us know in the comments…

Heard it went very well….couple hundred people despite the nasty weather.
Curious why Spilka’s opponent in a congressional primary would announce through a youtube video and not in person with supporters? It’s not a national/global election and the primary voters will be mixed with elderly who may not access youtube much. Strikes me as odd.
.
…just me, I guess.

The Middlesex-Norfolk-Worcester Democratic Alliance meets on the first Monday every month at 7, but this month we moved the meeting up to 5:30 so that anyone who wanted to attend this event would be able to go. Here’s a pic of the crowd outside:
There was quite a crowd inside the office as well, and volunteers were on hand gathering contact data from attendees. After giving a speech, in which she highlighted her reasons for runni9ng and her humble beginnings in public life as a member of the Ashland School Committee, Senator Spilka was interviewed by local media:
It was a great event, I’m glad I went. While I live in CD4, I’ll support Senator Spilka for CD5 – she has supported my efforts against the casino in Milford, so a little activism is the least I can do.
