Mystery PAC backing Gabriel Gomez in Massachusetts
A mystery pro-Gabriel Gomez group started buying around $700,000 in television air time in Massachusetts today, the latest entrant to the independent expenditure entities playing in the Senate special election there.
The group, Americans for Progressive Action, is registered in Florida. There is nothing in its FEC filings signalling where it falls on the political spectrum, but a GOP media buying firm is placing the ads. And the group’s treasurer, Nancy Watkins, is a Republican who has worked for a number of outside groups, according to past news accounts. She also served as treasurer for Michele Bachmann’s presidential campaign.
It looks like the Gabriel Gomez strategy for the final two weeks of the campaign is to shamelessly pretend to be a Democrat. I mean, Americans for Progressive Action?! Obviously, this is Frank Luntz-style chicanery designed to get low-information voters to think, “Well, if a “progressive” group supports Gomez, he must be moderate.” Of course, it’s a shameless lie.
To boot, Gomez’s big ally here is Michele Bachmann’s presidential campaign’s treasurer?! This is Gabriel Gomez’s cavalry. One could wonder if this was Team Gomez’s plan all along, prompting Gomez to repeatedly reject the People’s Pledge throughout the campaign.
Anybody else’s head spinning from the absurdity?
