Unless I missed it, I haven’t seen this posted here. On August 20 Juliette Kayyem filed her statement of organization for a campaign for Governor with OCPF.
I’m on my way out of town so I don’t have time to say much more. Here’s the link to the post from Joyce announcing her event with Juliette. Joyce, anyone? How did it go?
Anyone else have any thoughts on her candidacy?
Please share widely!
But he makes a lot of assumptions substituting for analysis in his laudatory article on her. He assumes Wolf is out, which I don’t, and assumes our primary electorate wants someone who is not a mid aged white male who is an outsider. He also thinks the DHS experience is an asset not a liability.
Not saying he is wrong, but I think those are wide assumptions events may not bare out. DHS opens her up to NSA issues and could be a liability in a left leaning primary, he seems to be running as a “progressive centrist” like Booker when we need a progressive populist like Wolf, Berwick or Capuano. Also I don’t want another outsider, I want someone who knows how dysfunctional the leg is on day 1 and is committed to empowering thengrassroot to fix it. Don’t see her doing that yet. But I welcome her candidacy and invite her to BMG.
Bernstein is quick at the keys but not always spot on with his assessments. He lends quite a bit of personal filter to his observations. Just sayin’
According to a statement this morning.
Right of the bat I’m skittish about the DHS issue, I agree with JConway. If you can’t stand for our civil liberties how can we expect you to stand up for other progressive values? We need someone who isn’t afraid to go toe to toe with the Speaker and reform the system.
I like Berwick on the issues, he is less confrontational, but more progressive than Grossman.
Grossman has been to the Right of Governor Patrick when it comes to fighting for revenue. He is very cautious on that front. Grossman also won’t state his position on single payer. I don’t think he would go toe to toe with DeLeo either. Grossman is a great candidate none the less, and I’d be happy to support him after the primary. He is the person to beat.
If Caps runs I’ll be behind him 100%. He is more progressive than Markey though he can be a bit abrasive and hyperbolic at times. I don’t know as much about Joe Curtatone, but he fits a similar mold. But if we want someone who can go toe to toe with the Speaker when it comes to reform or casinos we need someone tough and progressive…if only one of them will enter….
I feel like I’m forgetting someone. A…Ava…
This is my first glimpse of this candidate, so I cannot really assess her. She kept us safe from terrorists, though, whereas our President George W. Bush did not. She no longer held responsibilities in our Department of Homeland Security when the Marathon bombs hit us. I will not yet heed her call to donate money, because I used to donate to candidates who did not last the full campaign cycle. Saying that she is ethnically Lebanese explains to us why her name is not spelled like the hotdog brand. She reminds silly me that not all immigrants are Latinos. Kayyem seems more of a child-raiser and mother than a few darling liberals. I look forward to seeing her if she campaigns in my town.
Although Kayyem produced a good welcome video, she should have used finer print in her disclaimers that our Department of Defense was not per se endorsing her.
I will wait to hear her to show if adequate health care to her needs be universal in its accessibility and dispensation.
Good thing she is not related to the encased meat Brahmins of Chelsea, they have a hot dog cart on state property and we wouldn’t want the Ethucs Committee hitting her over such a gross conflict of interest.
It was good. She was the fourth of the potential/candidates I’ve had here. Though I had more RSVPs for this one than all the others, fewer people actually showed (maybe 25). I guess we’ll chalk that up to it being a beautiful summer night in August. Also of note – this was the ONLY one of these I’ve done where there was Boston press – David Bernstein and Mike Deehan. (A Cape Cod Times reporter showed up for Dan Wolf. As did a tracker! Early for that.)
She’s clearly a very accomplished woman, and she definitely connected with some of the activists in the room. She wasn’t AS one-issue as I expected. Didn’t know she’d done a lot of civil rights work for instance. Who knows? This event took place almost two years to the day when a another female political neophyte with a Harvard affiliation and a bunch of books came to talk to my friends about whether she should run for the U.S. Senate. THAT worked out pretty well!
This will be a tough one for me (though I won’t go anywhere near it for a while) because I like everyone I’ve met so far!
Did you know it was going to be used as the kick off video? Others there were not and were not there to endorse, solely to listen. Seems a bit insincere of Juliette,”I am only exploring, but producing a commercial in your living room?”
I was not aware it would be used in this way, no. But the camera was clearly visible (And it was the first video camera we’ve had at one of these. She did ask if it was OK to film.) She should have been explicit. That said, I don’t think anyone in the video appears to be endorsing.
On the photos of Kayyem with military folks, there’s a small-print disclaimer reading “use of photo does not imply endorsement of Department of Defense or US military.” She should have posted a similar disclaimer on the footage from your living room! đŸ˜€
