I’m a Sciortino supporter, but even if I wasn’t I would love this ad. It’s perfect. I wonder if it could shake up this race given the 50,000 views in less than a day and coverage in WashPo, Boston Globe, Boston Herald, Miami Herald, USA Today, Wonkette, Mediaite, Dailykos, Gawker, HuffPo, Buzzfeed, a bunch of other news sources, and lots and lots of social sharing. (sorry for not including links to those stories). Even if he loses, Sciortino is doing a great job raising his local and national profile with this race, and for all the right reasons.
Please share widely!

That was the funniest and perhaps the best political ad I’ve ever seen. Loved it!
Trickle up says
I can’t think when I’ve seen such a light and effective political message.

The ad that won De Blasio the NYC mayoral primary. Similar strategy, in some ways.

I’ve never been sure what sort of weight to put on this, but I had always known Carl Sciortino had rather conservative family members. A Democratic Congressperson is going to have to be able to deal with conservatives for another few years so having someone who can do that without abandoning principles seems like a useful qualification.
I can’t speak about other candidates in this race though.

It’s a strong field of candidates, but Sciortino strikes me as the one with star quality. He understands issues at their core level, consistently proposes smart legislation and almost always strikes a perfect note when advocating for the things he believes in.

I would vote for Carl’s dad.
johnk says
he’s helping his son with his liberal positions get elected.

It’s a nice ad.

From a lot of out of state friends. This should boost fundraising and help turn out voters. Well done.
stomv says
should have had them get up from their chairs (one in the kitchen, one in the living room) and hug or something. “I love you dad… ” should have been face to face.
By “should”, I mean it would have slightly improved a really really good ad. This isn’t meant to diminish the ad.
hlpeary says
Same ad maker for both candidates I believe, but Carl’s works better.
hlpeary says
pretty good viral action

Carl AND his dad will be on Hardball with Chris Matthews tomorrow.

There is a very funny moment in the video where one might expect Carl to come out that reminds me of the Reverend Professor Peter Gomes of Harvard:

One of my all time favorite preachers and Republicans (though he finally switched in 2006).

It’s up to over 218,000 views! Yowza. Soon to hit 220,000…

The first time I met Carl, he essentially said ‘You don’t like it? Run for office! I did!’
True to his values, straightforward in his position, an asset to the Massachusetts delegation!

I am supporting Karen Spilka for the CD-05 and adore Carl Sciortino.
One of the many things that struck me about this ad is what a far cry it is from the Scott Brownesque using of his female family members to boost his visuals and alleged credibility with women.
It’s Carl, it’s real and it’s real clever.
Mazeltov!
kbusch says
That’s the kind of generous comment one rarely sees in these parts during primary season.

Honestly, don’t we deserve 5 reps from this district?
I can’t think of a single one I would not be glad to vote for in the general.
midge says
Can I ask what makes you support her campaign over the others? It’s my district too and of all the candidates I’m considering, she’s far from the top, but not necessarily for many reasons other than I’ve barely heard of her or much of her.
HeartlandDem says
I am drawn to Karen Spilka because her work ethic is stellar. Her ability to reach over, around and out to people of different walks of life and perspectives is a talent and skill that I believe is most needed in Washington. I have watched her advocate tirelessly for constituents in – and even those outside of her district and get results. She doesn’t quit til she gets the needed outcomes. Her professional background includes social work/social justice, labor rights attorney and education/public school advocate.
Most recently, two examples: Karen led the charge to reverse the tech tax after listening and learning more about the unintended impacts/consequences upon business in the region. She has been a strong pro-tech and jobs advocate and chairs the Bio-Tech caucus. Her leadership brought legislators and Governor Patrick on board. Let’s hope the vote happens soon.
The CHINS reform – a major piece of desperately needed legislation was written and championed by Karen Spilka.
The reform to up the age to 17 for juvenile offenders was taken out of the CHINS reform legislation in order for it to pass (the greater good) and she pursued it in this legislative year and it passed this week!
She designed and implemented medical records efficiencies that will save the state/taxpayers billions of dollars over the next decade.
Her record on women’s issues is the strongest in the race. She voted for Marriage Equality and Health Care Reform when others weren’t even in the Senate.
So, ya. Experience, tenacity, hard work and results are the skills I think are needed in DC.
Each candidate has a tool box of skills and at least state that their positions are Progressive and Democrat policy based. In my perspective Spilka’s skills fit the current and foreseeable needs to be effective in DC (although “effective in DC” may have become and oxymoron 😉

I live in the 2nd District. But I am not so sure about Carl. I watched him on Jim Braude’s program on NECN a couple weeks back discuss how he would vote on military action. While every member of the MA delegation seems to be against the Obama-Kerry-McCain plan to intervene, I was not impressed with his arguments or analysis of the situation. His points were simple and under-developed, primarily based on generalized progressive talking points like “we were in Iraq for too long, I know people who were there. Now is not the time for another war” without fully evaluating the plan that will be before him. He said nothing about whether or not the proposed military strikes will be successful in deterring Assad from using future chemical weapons or the like. I think this young man needs to stay in the state house for a few more years.
wareinmass says
His arguments in this commercial are such a waste of the voters’ time. We can hardly raise the debt ceiling never mind passing a universal background check. How about issues like the loss of manufacturing jobs to overseas entities, the dumbing down of our educational offerings including the failed idea of “teaching to the test,” the violence and unrest in our cities that is caused by gangs, drugs, and hopelessness far more than the firearms they possess. Our country is on a slow march to taking a backseat to China in a generation. We need more disciplined leaders who will stand up against the Trans Pacific Partnership.
JimC says
But I would put the burden of proof firmly on the side of the war. Opposing war doesn’t have to be defended as much, because war is inherently wrong. Necessary, perhaps, at times … but still wrong/
sue-kennedy says
doesn’t cover every pressing issue. Perhaps the future 2 hour documentary would cover more issues with more depth, but there will still be important topics not reached.
Hey, I know. if you haven’t seen your particular priority addressed, come to an event and ask.
P.S Ask families of shooting victims if universal background checks are a waste of time. There are many pressing issues that require urgent action and I am thankful to every citizen activists that gives time and energy to at least one.
kbusch says
To put it mildly, you don’t seem to know what you’re talking about.
