For those following the Evan Dobelle saga, you’re aware that he has hired PR hack George Regan to help him bail out his sinking ship.
The Boston Globe has been quoting Regan in stories for the last couple of weeks and this morning Globe columnist Yvonne Abraham gives a little background on Regan’s notorious past (Globe registration maybe required).
But with all the ink the Globe has been devoting to the Dobelle/Regan campaign of deceit, they haven’t answered the one question this reader immediately wanted to know when I first read Regan was involved. Who is paying him? Is Dobelle paying him with Westfield State U money from tax payer funded accounts? From private money controlled by Westfield State? From Dobelle’s personal funds (which, if you’ve been following this story, is highly unlikely) or is George doing this out of the kindness of his heart?
Now maybe the Globe has asked the question to the two of them and felt the answer was not relevant to the story. But that would really leave me scratching my head–a story about someone misusing state/non-profit funds, who hires a high paid PR fixer, and some how the question of who is paying the fixer is not relevant? Maybe the Globe asked the question and never got a good answer–which the Globe should have informed their readers about. Or, maybe the Globe reporters and columnist never asked, because it never occurred to them. (Or maybe the Globe did answer this question once in print and I missed it…but I’ve read every word of every Dobelle story I’ve seen in the Globe–especially when I learned Regan was involved–but the question of who is paying Regan is to important to report just once and not provided as background in subsequent stories.)
Whatever the reason, the Globe is failing at least this faithful subscriber (which they are losing more of everyday) by not addressing this obvious issue.

Just wondering.

…understanding the implication of your question.
I don’t think the Globe is purposely going easy on Regan because he has a relationship with John Henry (as naive as that sounds). I just think they’ll lazy and the reporters, columnist and editors aren’t asking the question.
