I am posting this today to reach as many of my friends and associates as possible. This coming Tuesday October 15th is Primary day for the Congressional seat vacated by Ed Markey’s successful run for the US Senate. I have been a long time friend of Senator Markey’s meeting him 40 years ago on a basketball court on the Meford/Malden line and walking and dropping Lit for him in 1976. Knowing him and his values made it easy for 37 years to check off his name on a ballot. Now we have a field that does not include the name Markey to consider, this field of Candidates most who I have met and know to a varying degree and I believe all would certainly make us proud to have them as our Congressman so choosing just one is a very hard task. I can not think of an election in my 40 years of voting that had me feel so uncomfortable in choosing one candidate over another.
This past weekend I sat with all the lit and walked through it and thought long and hard of the individuals remembering each and the times we met and talked politics. I was sitting with the TV on when an Ad came on and it struck me this is what it was like back in 1976 when Ed Markey at the age of 30 ran his ad of the desk in the halls of the State House. It was at that moment I realized that times have changed but also come full circle and it is time for that new young leader to step up and to do for the current young people what Ed Markey did for me in 1976. That ad was a candidate and his Dad, 35 year old Representative Carl Sciortino. It is why I am voting for him and asking you all to join me. Change is hard passing the torch to the younger generation is some what scary but no more so then it was for me as a young man to accept the torch as we worked to get that young Representative elected to congress in 1976. It is time for another generation to step forward with a new leader. He will never come close to filling Congressman Ed Markey’s shoes but he will walk in his own and provide leadership representing the values of a younger generation.
Change is hard and to my many other friends who are also running I wish I had the option to vote for all of you but Carl has won my vote and my support.
