From Andrew Sullivan’s blog, it appears the Houston Chronicle is less than pleased with their previous endorsement of Ted Cruz. The Money Quote:
When we endorsed Ted Cruz [over Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst] in last November’s general election, we did so with many reservations and at least one specific recommendation – that he follow Hutchison’s example in his conduct as a senator. Obviously, he has not done so. Cruz has been part of the problem in specific situations where Hutchison would have been part of the solution. We feel certain she would have worked shoulder to shoulder with Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, in crafting a workable solution that likely would have avoided the government shutdown altogether.

It was clear last fall what Ted Cruz wanted to be. They still chose him over an unoffensive conservadem. Now they’ve already confirmed they’re not retracting their endorsement and we can fast-forward to October 2018, when they’ll say they “haven’t always agreed with everything Senator Cruz has done,” but they have no choice but to endorse him because his opponent isn’t exciting, or hasn’t raised enough money, or might someday vote for something left of George W. Bush.
They were mad because Cruz, unlike Kay Bailey Hutchinson, wasn’t working with Collins to forge a deal. The Collins proposal was DOA anyway. Seems the White House told Reid not to accept it.
