IL HOUSE APPROVES MARRIAGE EQUALITY-GOV. QUINN TO SIGN!
Massachusetts was the state I grew up in, Cambridge my hometown, and it will always be that way no matter where I live. I happen to live in Illinois and am proud that my adopted state and it’s government has finally garnered a positive historic headline. Instead of impeaching Governors, tangling over legislative pay, crushing union pensions, or building even more casinos-our ostensibly Democratic legislature did something, well downright democratic. In approving marriage equality tons of great friends of mine will finally have their marriages legally recognized, not just in MA, Canada, CT, or MN where they took place-but in Chicago where we all live, work, and hope to raise families! 15 down 35 to go.
2013 has been a remarkable year in the fight for marriage equality. The next state to keep an eye on is New Mexico, with marriage equality currently before the state Supreme Court.
Yesterday two Hawaii state House legislative committees wrapped up joint hearing of about 60 (!!!) hours of public testimony on the marriage bill. The committees then voted to pass the bill out of committee. A House vote is expected as early as today. The Senate already passed the bill a few weeks ago, and Gov. Abercrombie is in complete support. So, freedom to marry state No. 16 is just about to be born.
I had no idea Hawaii was getting so close. I guess the bigger question is who is no 17?
The Daily Show is on the case!
My guess is that Key West will try to annex itself to anywhere else (maybe even Cuba), because of the hatred. Besides, they have no concept of “The Train Has Left The Station” unless it is a monorail in Disney World.
Can’t imagine the theocracy known as the state of Utah will allow it before Florida.
I think we have a winner.
So if Utah want to have child brides and multiple marriages and all that other baggage, they may eventually see this as the camel’s nose in the tent.
My mother’s family was is from Utah, and they have both me and one of my cousins as openly gay, so I just have hope that they will not be last, based on nothing but a leap of faith, “if you can call it that”.
Still, someone’s gotta be last. They seem to have been clear that the other stuff you mention doesn’t bother them the way this does.
As much as I got issues with FL, I actually think it has enough social moderates to win through. It may beat OH to being the first purple state to pass it. You have huge populations not just in Key West but Miami, Crist is now pro-equality and looks likely to get elected, and Ilena Roz-Leihten is one of the most pro-equality Republicans there is. It’s one of the rare states that can produce an Allen West and Alan Grayson.
NM is the only state without a law explicitly including or excluding s-s couples from the marriage laws. The NMSC heard a challenge to the “traditional” prohibitions a few weeks ago and gave everyone the impression that they were going to rule quickly. Heck, they could still beat Hawaii to the punch.
