Veteran’s Day was originally Armistice Day, so named for the cessation of hostilities in World War I. And Britten’s War Requiem achieves much of its power by brilliantly interweaving the text of the Latin Requiem Mass with the searing poetry of Wilfred Owen, a British poet who died serving in World War I at the age of 25. The poem set in the Lacrimosa is called “Futility.”
So it seems especially appropriate to listen to this piece today.
