With steady cold temperatures for the next 5 months or so, I declared my annual war on the oil companies by firing up my coal insert today. For those who recently joined BMG, I decided a couple years ago to burn clean coal, anthracite coal, for my heat source. After my initial investment in purchasing the insert and installation, it costs about $7.00 a day to keep the house at a warm 74 degrees. And if the kids are bad, Santa simply grabs a handful out of the bin and puts some in their stockings.
And a fellow BMGer recently posted that the supply of fracked natural gas may not last as long as anticipated. So even those who heat with natural gas, should plan ahead and think about diversifying their heat source. For those that use a wood stove, you don’t know what you are missing. No need to constantly feed the stove, once a day, and I am done. And the heat thrown is consistent. No worries about bugs or creosote like you get with wood. Consider upgrading to a better fuel.
By flicking my burner switch to the off position, I feel like I am giving the finger to Mid-East oil and Venezuelan oil, while helping Americans who harvest the coal in PA. The only thing missing is a cold Yuengling to celebrate.

My family did that back in the late 1970s when oil prices skyrocketed. We burned coal and wood. Every winter we’d get nasty sinus infections from it. You’re not telling any new story here, Dan.
(Besides, shouldn’t you be making non sequitirs over on the Willy Lantigua thread?)

Looks like Lynne got the better deal with solar, you should check that out.

I believe the panels are strictly for electricity, so I doubt it generates heat, unless she uses electrical heat. I wouldn’t be surprised if she uses oil heat, b/c the home seemed to be in a rural area, where gas lines are not available.

More than 14 million US homes are heated by propane. Propane is much less harmful to the environment than coal or oil. Even if Lynne doesn’t heat with electricity, oil and coal are not her only options.

Anyone heat with propane who can give us an idea?
Some propane comes from oil refineries too.

The trucked-in kind of propane is pretty expensive.

Here is a nifty instruction video

Gee, and here I was thinking it was the clouds that made summers so hot!:)

Today he declares his right to produce as much pollution as he likes, by burning the most planet-hostile available fossil fuel (burning anthracite produces more CO2 than any other fuel, including bituminous coal). He gives the finger to his neighbors, aggravating their childrens’ asthma and generally stinking up the place. He’s proud to say “Screw you all, this is good for ME.”

DFW is not a MeMeMe voter or type of guy – he said so himself!:)
