This week Zoo New England announced that it raised $4.5 million to build a new nature learning center in Boston’s Franklin park neighborhood. This is great news for a whole new generation of Greater Boston children and their families, and marks a stunning turnaround for a vital cultural institution that also includes the Stone Zoo in Stoneham.
It is also a reminder of why Jason Lewis should be our next State Senator.
Here’s the connection: In 2010 Zoo New England was in dire straits. State funding had plummeted. Its business model was broken. The Zoo was at odds with the Governor and many of its supporters in the Legislature.
State Rep. Jason Lewis, along with Sen. Katherine Clark, stepped in to lead an effort that resulted in landmark legislation that established a new governance structure for the Zoo. The law–passed unanimously in the House of Representatives–gave the Zoo the flexibility to operate more like a traditional nonprofit by raising private sector money to match the state’s annual appropriation. And the imprimatur of the Governor and Legislature gave investors in the Zoo renewed confidence that it could achieve its mission and balance its books, as this week’s announcement demonstrated.
With an MBA’s financial acumen and a legislator’s ability to compromise, Jason Lewis helped rescue one of our region’s most beloved institutions. This is the kind of leader we need in the Massachusetts Senate.
Sincerely,
Greg Liakos

Seriously, this is a close race between a good progressive and a tea party Republican in a swing district. It’s very winnable — I think we’re going to win — but it’s not a slam dunk.
I’m lousy at canvassing, so I’m cooking. There will be some nifty food. (Some Texas Dems taught me about kolachki, which are terrific; today’s had smoked sausage, Hatch pickles peppers, and apricot baked into sweet little rolls. Got other ideas? Let me know!)
So give Ally a call, lend a hand, grab a snack, and improve the Commonwealth. ally@electionjasonlewis.com: 339 – 224 – 4907

Those kolachkis were INSANE today, Mark. Thanks so much. Good food from you yesterday and today has kept this and many other canvassers going through the rain and wind and cold. Thanks so much!

In Malden, Melrose, Reading, Wakefield, and the relevant precincts of Winchester to go out and vote on Tuesday — and get all THEIR friends to vote. Every vote will count, as this district was, before Katherine Clark, held by a Republican. Low turnout will be the chief enemy, so please help get out the vote in this important Special Election.

I’m feeling good, but we need all hands on deck.
The robocall from Senator Warren hit today and it felt like the cavalry arriving. Probably half of the voters I spoke with today while door knocking had just gotten the call before I showed up. So appreciative of Senator Warren’s support.
If you or anyone you know has any spare time tomorrow or Tuesday, come on up to 5th Middlesex and help us get out the vote for Jason Lewis!
