Today, 1199SEIU endorsed Martha Coakley’s campaign for Governor. In making the endorsement the group cited “her longstanding leadership on key issues such as lowering healthcare costs, improving jobs and training in the healthcare sector, creating a more fair economy by raising the minimum wage, and providing paid sick time for all workers.”
Within the past eight days Martha’s candidacy has been endorsed by Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts and by Mass Equality, in addition to the 1199 endorsement – a hat trick for the AG. These groups represent different interests and show the breadth of support she has across a number of constituencies.
I continue to be active in her campaign, going door to door on a regular basis, as well as reaching out to delegates to the convention. There are so many voters across the Commonwealth who support Martha. I see an enthusiastic response wherever I go. I’ve been talking to voters where I live in Westborough, as well as in Worcester, Marlborough, Shrewsbury, Framingham and Northborough. Martha is out there with us whenever she can. She’s knocked on doors with us in Worcester and in Framingham and is looking to do more.
Martha also is spending a great deal of time meeting voters at events. Please consider joining her in Arlington, Dorchester or Framingham on Saturday. I’m planning to be at the event in Framingham. Please consider this to be a personal invitation to fellow BMGers to join me in Framingham and meet the AG. срочный интернет займ на карту
I think these endorsements represent a wide range of people and issues.
everyone I know in government is backing Steve Grossman, not Martha Coakley. (That’s not a shot at any of the candidates).
Mark’s statement about everyone he knows in government is backing Treasurer Grossman would seem to undercut Bob contention that AG Coakley is the candidate of the establishment and powers that be. Is there more of an “establishment” than state government? I have a hard time viewing AG Coakley as the insiders candidate in this race.
I would divide the field thusly:
Insider: Grossman, Coakley
Outsider: Berwick, Kayyem, Avellone
a politician in Hampshire County who doesn’t support Steve Grossman.
At our tiny caucus, we were all for Berwick, except one person who is supporting Coakley.
This is the second time that Martha will be in Arlington for a house party in the past few months. We are looking forward to another chance to talk with her about issues that are important to us.
It’s been way too long since we have had a BMG gathering. The closest thing is my holiday party and while that attracts a lot of BMGers, it’s more of a mainstream Dem thing.
You mean there’s a difference?:)
Don’t know if you read the actual news out of SEIU today, kate, but the SEIU also endorsed Tolman for Attorney General today. Not just 1199, either, but the entire state council of the SEIU. That’s six chapters, 90,000 members. Just thought I’d mention it in case you missed it.
nt
I would expect a lot of labor support for Tolman, both for his own record and the fact that his brother is president of MA AFL-CIO.
1199 SEIU is part of the Mass AFL-CIO. Warren is winning individual union endorsements on his own record not his brother’s position. The state AFL-CIO has not yet endorsed in this race, the process is wide open. That said, Warren Tolman’s own record as a Rep and Senator earned him my Union’s endorsement, as I suspect it earned him 1199’s as well.
I’m curious why Coakley got 1199, and Tolman got the entire state SEIU. Is this common? Have the other SEIU chapters endorsed other candidates for Governor?
I’m a lifelong union guy. Coakley and Tolman both have proven records of supporting organized labor, and I’m proud to say that both of these candidates were far out in front the last time polls were taken in these races. Martha is my girl! I’ll be standing outside a polling place holding a sign in November!
Will she get the feet on the ground activists? So far, I don’t see that happening. In our DTC, she doesn’t have as many supporters as Berwick has. Grossman is running far ahead of all.
…which as we all know is worth SEVERAL feet on the ground!:)
and the number of unions endorsing Coakley have a history of feet on the street for their supported candidate. DTCs are a small part of the grassroots.
If you look at some of the metrics for feet on the ground, Martha is number one. She was the first statewide candidate to turn in more that 10,000 signatures and has collected more than 25,000 signatures. To my knowledge this is the most that any candidate has announced. A few weeks ago the campaign had knocked on more than 10,000 doors since the caucuses ended. I don’t know of any of the statewide campaigns that has knocked on as many doors over this time frame.
Chris and Striker, Thanks for your kind words. I was out knocking on doors this afternoon and will be out again tomorrow morning. And others are joining me in my canvasses. This is indeed a campaign with feet on the ground Bob, thanks for your generous comments.
