More questionable decisions by the MA GOP. Now that the MA GOP, by proclamation, will like to add Mark Fisher to the Republican primary for Governor (didn’t know you could do that), they are voting to jump in early and support Charlie Baker in the primary. Obviously, not a common practice, parties normally support the winner of their primary, not throw money against another Republican during a primary.
The Mass GOP executive committee will meet Saturday, where it will discuss “potential support for candidates in a primary,” according to one member. The expected vote, party officials say, will center on whether to commit financial support and other assistance to Baker despite the party primary.
…
“Will it pass? Probably,” Zykofsky said
So, is this the time where the Baker campaign steps in and tells the Republican state party that; “I got this”, let the primary play out and then throw your support to me and we can focus on the Democratic challenger. Right? Nope.
In a statement, Baker spokesman Tim Buckley said the Swampscott Republican is focused on earning “every vote, Democrat, Republican and Independent, and would be honored to receive their support in his campaign to lead Massachusetts in a new direction.”
But my favorite line from Republican executive committee member Zykofsky
I think it’s very likely Charlie is going to be the nominee, and I want to give him all the help we can. And he needs it.”
Oy vey, with friends like these.
