The band was playing, hundreds and hundreds of people were there — and there was just a ton of excitement. That pretty much sums up how today’s rally for Congressman Tierney in Salem went, with Senator Liz Warren headlining the rally as she made her endorsement of Congressman Tierney official.
What really stood out to me at the rally was how closely they’ve truly worked together. Senator Warren made note of it in her speech — that long before she was a Senator, Congressman Tierney would always be someone who would listen, whether it was on consumer protection or on making student loans more affordable.
As an even better demonstration of their partnership on the issues, the two of them would have been having this rally last week if not for the fact that both Liz and Congressman Tierney had to be in DC together to be with the President as he acted to help millions of Americans with their student loans — an issue Liz and John have worked together on really closely, two of the biggest forces in pushing it along.
Below is Congressman Tierney’s Press Release on the event from the email they sent out. It lists many of the ways they’ve worked together and describes just why it’s so important to reelect Congressman Tierney.
We need someone with the strong progressive values Congressman Tierney has consistently demonstrated over the years — and to make any progress in the House, Liz Warren does too. That’s how we’re going to get real progress across the country — and across the entire 6th district.

Senator Elizabeth Warren Endorses John Tierney
Warren praised Tierney as a champion for middle-class families
SALEM, MA– Senator Elizabeth Warren today announced her strong endorsement of John Tierney at a campaign event in Salem, Massachusetts. As colleagues in Congress, Tierney and Warren have worked together on a host of issues effecting middle-class families including student loan interest rates, Wall Street reform and consumer protections.
“Congressman Tierney is a tireless champion for Massachusetts’ families,” said Senator Warren. “I had the chance to work closely with Congressman Tierney on consumer protection issues years before I ran for the Senate, and I’m very glad to work as his partner in Congress today. Throughout his career, he has fought hard to strengthen our schools, to improve access to high-quality, affordable education, and to make the kinds of investments that grow our economy in the 6th District and across the Commonwealth. I’m proud to stand with Congressman Tierney. We need to send him back to Washington so he can continue fighting for a level playing field for working families.”
“It is an honor to have the strong support of my good friend and colleague, Senator Elizabeth Warren,” said John Tierney. “Senator Warren has been an unwavering partner of mine in the fight to make sure seniors, students, veterans and working families get a fair shot at living the American dream. Even before she joined me in Congress, Senator Warren and I were working together to provide relief to students with unmanageable loan debt and protections to consumers being ripped off by credit card companies. We both know that this election is about standing on the side of middle-class families, not the millionaires and billionaires. I am proud to have Senator Warren on my side. I look forward to continuing our work together to ensure every family across this district has a fair shot.”
Tierney and Warren have long worked together on making higher education more affordable, increasing loan forgiveness options for college graduates, and protecting consumers. Last month, Tierney and Warren filed legislation in their respective chambers that would allow student loan borrowers to refinance at a lower rate. This builds on legislation they previously filed together to give student loan borrowers the same rate as big banks receive from the Federal Reserve. Tierney and Warren have also partnered on filing legislation to protect seniors, retirees, and families from financial institutions that engage in risky investment transactions (21st Century Glass-Steagall Act). Even prior to her election to the US Senate, Elizabeth Warren worked closely with John Tierney when Congress was considering the College Cost Reduction Act in 2007 and the Credit Card Holders’ Bill of Rights in 2009.

My words are mine and mine alone. They should not be considered reflective of any other group or person.
Congressman Tierney is great, we need him to win his primary and the general election.
As Rye is well aware, but he is a workhorse who has pit the past behind him and well knock on every door. His opponents are a Democrat who claims Senator Warren stole the convention on the one hand, and another who was planning on running as an independent not two years ago and whose campaign is funded by out of state hedge fund capital. And we all know how much of a fraud Rich Tisei is on economic issues-falsely proclaiming to be a tolerant moderate while being quite intolerant of Social Security or Medicare which he would privatize and voucherize respectively. The choice is clear-Tierney is the only Democrat in the race. With powerful progressives like Liz Warren and Kim Driscoll standing by his side, he will have another term to fight.
The other factor that I think has served Tierney well in the past and will do so again in this race is that he and his office have a very solid reputation for excellent constituent service. I’ve heard this from multiple people I’ve met who’ve lived in MA-6 for awhile and have had dealings with his office, called for assistance with various issues.
Glad to see Senator Warren going to bat for Tierney — I’m sure it’ll help him a lot to have such strong support, especially from her.
Also I could not agree more with your points about Tierney’s “Democratic” opponents in the primary. In addition to the points you raise about both of them, there’s this from DeFranco’s communications director:

Always nice to prove your bona fides as a Democrat with sexism, ageism and racism….and to claim to have been a consistent supporter of other Democrats in the past…except for Elizabeth Warren, natch.
I completely agree.
About two months back I sent an e-mail to his office (essentially venting on my displeasure with student loans). A few days later, I received a phone call from Tierney himself. It is nice to know he actually cares and really has a great wealth of knowledge on the subject.
He seems to always be available to his constituents and I really appreciate seeing him at various events around the district (in non-election years too).
Her 2012 whining left a bad taste. But employing a consultant who calls Elizabeth Warren “Fauxcahontas” in the title of a press release? And claims that’s how she’s “locally known?” Fuck you. No, really, fuck you.
Neither her site nor the one you link indicate a connection that I could find, and the article strikes me as mostly pro-Tisei.
Whose Twitter feed is pretty much exclusively Marisa DeFranco, with a dozen recent blog posts about her campaign. The Facebook has some gems too. I’m on the phone or I’d link.
On Twitter is calling them DeFranco’s communications director.
I’m not in the district, but a friend of mine is helping Moulton, and I see no reason to believe he’s not a real Democrat.

And I respect you and respect Seth’s service to his country. What worries me is he is fairly vague on a lot of these issues, called himself a centrist independent the last time he looked at the race, and has a lot of out of state money coming in from the firms he has worked for in the last. He has yet to post here, I am not sure if he worked the caucuses or convention looking for support, and the progressives I know from the district like Driscoll, rye, Fred LaRiccia, and obviously our states best known progressive seem to be placing their bets on Tierney.
I would love to learn more about Seth and have him come on here, I for one would give him fair treatment and consideration, though I’m convinced that Tierney is in it to win it (which I wasn’t in the past when I also was intrigued by Seth).
In light of the quotes around “Democrats” above.
and I am with Seth. I have been for more than a year. I have contributed to him, and will help him with my town. He’s a real Democrat. I am way far out of the “stick with the devil you know” line of thinking and willing to take a chance on new blood.
