Of all the contrasts in this year’s elections, the most dramatic may be the difference in the way Seth Moulton and Scott Brown have talked about their military service.
Scott Brown has used his service in the National Guard as a weapon against his opponent in the New Hampshire Senate race, Senator Jeanne Shaheen, citing it in debates to make Shaheen look comparatively naïve about foreign threats.
By contrast, in his House race against Republican Richard Tisei, Seth Moulton did the rarest of the rare politically: he kept his distinguished service medals including the Bronze Star secret rather than exploiting them.
While all veterans should be thanked and honored for their service, and are entitled to use their service in any way they choose, Seth Moulton’s modesty comes out looking superior to Scott Brown, and may turn out to be an unfortunate coincidence for Brown politically in his tight race with Shaheen.
