Labor Day weekend is here. My family is like so many families in the U. S. We have a life with opportunities and choices because of organized labor. My great-grandfather, the son of an Irish immigrant, went to law school at night while working for the Teamsters in the early 1900s. He went on to become a State Representative and a leading labor lawyer, representing most of the locals in Boston. As a Representative, working with the American Federation of Labor, he filed legislation to ensure aid for dependent children, “as a right, not a charity.” Our discussion of health care today “as a right, not a privilege” echoes the sentiments from a century ago. Enjoy Labor Day and the long weekend while keeping in mind the meaning of the day.
Looking for a way to celebrate Labor Day that helps elect Democrats AND do something fun with non-political friends and family, and is good exercise? Consider marching in a parade with your favorite Democratic candidate.
So often as Democratic activists we have to make choices between helping our candidates and spending time with family. There are actually many ways that we can do both! ”Mike from Chelmsford” and Lynne were among other BMGers who went on the canal tour at Lowell National Historic Park and then went canvassing for Jamie Eldridge back when Jamie was running for Congress. Lynne came with us when we did the same thing for Elizabeth Warren in 2012.
Out my way the Marlborough Labor Day Parade is a very well run parade. There are lots of shuttle buses bringing marchers from the terminus to the start of the parade. Here are details on the parade. Last year as I traveled on the bus, the person in the seat next to me was Brian Herr, Republican nominee for U. S. Senate. We had a very cordial chat for about ten minutes as we drove across Marlborough. I asked him his opinion of all the statewide races.
I’ll leave it to campaigns to post details on requests for marchers.
Enjoy the holiday! займ без залога на карту

This morning Falmouth, MA, did an info table at the local supermarket for two hours. On Monday we’ll be standing at the Bourne rotary in the morning as the summer people leave. We’re hoping to find a group to do the annual bridge farewell somewhere in the mid-Cape too.
