With all the Presidential endorsement posts on BMG over the past few days, I couldn’t help but let folks know about one of Tuesday’s down ballot races. There is an open seat on the Democratic State Committee in the Second Suffolk & Middlesex district and I’m asking voters to consider supporting me, Steve Owens AKA “sco” — a longtime BMGer, for that position.
Back in the early days of Deval Patrick’s first gubernatorial campaign, our esteemed editor David accused me of being an insider because, in part, I was going to the 2006 Democratic State Convention as a Deval Patrick delegate. I certainly did not feel like an insider at the time, having just organized Watertown for Deval and scoring a huge insurgent victory at the Democratic caucus that February against the hometown candidate.
A few years later, I was elected chair of the Watertown Democratic Town Committee and had to admit I had finally become an insider after then-Representative Rachel Kaprielian took her name off the Democratic primary ballot, giving us the opportunity to get together in a proverbial smoke-filled room and anoint a successor. I’m still proud to say that we made the democratic choice and decided to leave the ballot blank, triggering an all write-in Democratic primary for State Rep that year.
I haven’t blogged as much since I’ve been Watertown DTC chair, but I’ve been working hard for Democratic and local progressive candidates. I have organized election day operations in Watertown for candidates such as Deval Patrick, Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey. I’ve brought together the Watertown and Belmont DTCs for collaborative events. I have worked with the Democratic State Committee as a member of their rules subcommittee.
My work locally has earned me the support of many local elected officials and activists including State Senator Will Brownsberger, State Reps Jon Hecht, Dave Rogers & John Lawn, Middlesex County Sheriff Peter Koutoujian, all nine members of the Watertown Town Council, and countless others. I’ve been endorsed by the Boston Ward 4 Democratic Committee as well as the Belmont and Watertown Democratic Town Committees.
A vote for me on Tuesday will help me finally complete my transformation to insider, proving David right once and for all.
