Nobel Laureate and one of the best known Holocaust survivors Elie Wiesel passed away earlier today at his home in Manhattan at the age of 87. I first became familiar with his life and work because Night was on the required reading list one summer in high school.

And in these times, when there is an upsurge in anti-semitism, and indeed of ethnic hatred honoring his message and, ourselves, doing what we can each to do aid refugees, including our own displaced people such as the addicts left without treatment by the closing of the Long Island Bridge and thus, the destruction of the programs providing them shelter – we honor Elie Weisel’s memory…and our own humanity. In the Long Game of history, our society will be remembered not by its billionaires but by how we as a society did or did not care for the vulnerable and the stranger.
