I thought of this Latin quote : ” Let justice be done though the heavens fall ” this Memorial Day as I listened to former CIA Director John Brennan close his Russia / Trump scandal testimony this week before the House Intelligence Committee when he was asked why we should care ? Why do you care ?
” Because for the last 241 years this nation and its citizens have cherished the freedom and liberty that this country was founded upon. Many, many Americans — brave Americans over the years — have lost their lives to be able to protect that freedom and liberty.
They’ve lost their lives also to protect the freedom and liberties of other countries and other peoples around the world. Our ability to choose our elected leaders is, I believe, an inalienable right that we must protect with all of our resources and all of our authority and power.
And the fact that the Russians tried to influence that election so that the will of the American people was not going to be realized by that election, I find outrageous and something that we need to, with every last ounce of devotion to this country, resist. And to try to act to prevent further instances of that.
And so, therefore, I believe that this is something that’s critically important to every American. Certainly it’s important to me, for my children and grandchildren, to make sure that never again will a foreign country try to influence and interfere in the foundation stone of this country, which is electing our democratic leaders.”
RESIST !

It can be stultifying to talk to Trump supporters who seem to be impervious to the most hair-curling stories about Trump’s amazingly consistent and brazen bent toward Russia.
But we need to keep talking to these people and letting them know the facts about Russian interference. I have found that many literally have never even heard of the essential facts regarding, say, Michael Flynn being being paid by Turkey and Russia.
We need to provide just the bare facts to them in person. They have no access to the facts otherwise.
Only then will understand that someday we’ll be talking about who stood up for principle and whobcaved in this precarious period.

Right now, I’d say the health of American society is on life support.

It sickens me that 72 years after World War Two ended we are now debating whether or not America has a responsibility to protect Europe again. I strongly disagree with President Reagans record on most issues-but his speech at Normandy was a clarion call that linked the brave men who fought on those beaches with the need for NATO and American leadership in the present. Trumps attitudes towards NATO and Russia dishonor those men.
bob-gardner says
You do realize that the Americans who died at Normandy were fighting on the same side as Russia, don’t you?
jconway says
You know I was linking that fight to the creation of NATO and the need to have it today. Your anti-anti-Russia stance is getting awfully tiresome.

Russia today, under Trump’s Puppet Master Putin, is a corrupt, Fascist, anti-democratic, criminal oligarchy. Wake up and smell the coffee.

Yes, of course. And that’s relevant because? (I have nothing against Russia. I spent a lot of time there and live Russians.)
