Watching the 1985 Ken Burns documentary on the Statue of Liberty (by which my mother passed in the 1950’s, one of the last to do so, off the boat from Ireland), is actually cruel in this current bleak time, but I am glad they are showing it. The American soul is currently at stake. It is not doing well.
The pain of seeing our declining civic values in plain relief and in the mirror must spur us on to renewal. This too shall pass. Our higher angels must and will prevail.
