When I think of Joe DeNucci, I remember the special bond of friendship he had with my late Dad, who was a Golden Gloves boxer. They always met with their fists up, then greeted each other in a warm embrace.
As an LGBT activist , I will never forget his courageous outspoken advocacy for our cause in 1983 before it was popular.

Sorry to hear it. I’m hard pressed to think of a politician more universally liked. Some people said he went too easy on things, but not always. I never heard a bad word about him personally.

My grandfather grew up with him in Newton, and he and my grandmother remember going to some of his fights. I criticized him on this blog on occasion for his patronage hires and sticking around a term too long, but he did his job and he did it well. One of the last of the old school pols. I’ll take an old fashioned ward heeler who gave the occasional job to a nephew over most of the cookie cutter corporate people we have today.
