Here’s a few questions for all you media experts.
- If the Boston Globe was still owned by the New York Times or the Taylor family would it have reacted differently to the Hilary Sargent situation? Would either owner have filed a lawsuit?
- Considering the power dynamics, was it appropriate for McGrory to ask Hilary out if she was a 19-22 year old intern and McGrory was 37-40 year old metro columnist ? (Nobody believes Hilary asked McGrory out, do they?)
- Is it possible that after they dated Hilary realized what a creep McGrory was for taking advantage of her when she was wide eyed intern? (Monica Lewinsky didn’t realize she was the victim of a creep until years later)
- Because of the power dynamic, did Hilary feel pressured or uncomfortable when the late 30s Big-Man-At-Globe McGrory asked her out?
- Is it possible that after they dated Hilary realized how pervasive this unseemly conduct was at the Globe?
- Is it possible that the text message occurred at a time when the two were dating and following a night of passionate lovemaking?
- If McGrory and Hilary dated years after she was intern why hasn’t McGrory or the Globe told the public? (Note to Emily Rooney: Could you kindly ask Brian this when you the two of you are chatting?)
- If the text message occurred years after they dated and Hilary was looking for advice is it reasonable for her to be upset and cry if the immediate response to her sincere request for advice from this very powerful male who can make or break her career was a not so subtle request for sex?
- What was McGrory’s and Hilary’s relationship at the time of the texts? What do thier e-mails , texts, and phone records show for that time period?
- Is the Globe tone deaf on this?
- Does the fact that during Brian’s tenure at the Globe there was a “fuckability” list rating the female interns and there may have been an open culture encouraging male journalists and executives to take advantage of the young chickee-poos coming through the newsroom require an investigation by the Globe?
- Who will Hilary have representing her in court?
- Who will be the celebrity feminists coming out to publiclysupport Hilary?
- Why didn’t the Globe ask the court to silence Hilary? Oh wait, they can’t, this is America and there must not be a non-disclosure agreement.
- What allegations against the Globe will be made in Hilary’s answer and accompanying affidavits?
- Will this expose other people at the Globe?
- Will the court case mean that the public will learn more about the Globe’s response to Hilary’s reports of sexual harassment?
- Will the court case create a civil rights celebrity of Hilary Sargent?
- Were John Henry and Linda Pizzuti advised against bringing this suit by anyone?
- Can John and Linda take advice?
- Why was suit filed so fast?
- Was the crossing out of the demand for monetary damages a pathetic calculated maneuver by John and Linda?
- How come Emily Rooney is opening her mouth at all? Obviously she either is close or has a business relationship or both to the Globe? That whole WGBH and Globe relationship is so suspect. Anyway, I am sure Emily put up with sexual harassment during her day however she unknowingly had protection and she was never targeted as a trophy fook by some dirty old man. You think any of these slime balls in the news media were gong to mess with Andy Rooney’s daughter. No fucking way. (Only an honorable guy with honorable intention. Kirby Perkins RIP). Like the local pervert priest or scout master who never messed with a kid from a family that could come after him. But 19 year old Hilary was in their wheelhouse.
- Can John Henry force a favorable result as he did with Yawkey Way?
- Is there a difference in John and Linda’s eyes between Brian McGrory and Kevin Cullen?
- Was Brian married to his second wife when he sent the text message?
- Did Brian date any other Globe interns or females younger and lower than him in the pecking order?
- Is the Globe’s credibility at a historical crossroads?
- Seriously, other than the a very small incestuous group of local self-important types who gives a shit about the 2018 Boston Globe?
Sorry Brian, John, Linda, and Emily, this ain’t the 1970’s. Young women without powerful benefactors are not expendable anymore,

I think that the date and source of the text in question matters. I think that if there was harassment or other inappropriate behavior at the Globe, it should be addressed by the parties.
I think that the public nature of both the episode and this diary is creepy and voyeuristic (not to mention that this diary is again laced with more profanity than appropriate).
If I want to read pieces like this, I buy the tabloids at the register of my neighborhood grocery store.
Christopher says
Unless you are referring to Linda Tripp as a creep (and I’d be right there with you if you were) Monica Lewinsky is still not a victim.
SomervilleTom says
The Monica Lewinsky reference is just another cheapshot, and more evidence that this entire piece is just another troll.

I endorsed Ernie this time, but my endorsement is not unqualified. I agree with Tom about all of EB3’s vulgarity and his tone. I understand Tom’s point about tabloids, but the metaphor is exactly backward. Tabloids do not ask long lists of embarrassing questions; they buy up embarrassing stories and then kill them as a favor to their influential friends.
My other quibble with Ernie is that he published such an incomplete list of uncomfortable questions. He left out a question that should be brought up whenever sexual harassment is discussed.
How is it that the Secret Service, part of our “intelligence community” didn’t warn the Obamas about Harvey Weinstein? How could they fail to know either about Weinstein’s long record of misbehavior or his use of Black Cube? Didn’t anyone check out the story that was in the NY Post, even if that paper smeared the accuser? And if there is anything the “intelligence community” should be aware of, it’s the activities of organizations such as Black Cube. It makes you wonder if the Secret Service, like the National Enquirer, is a “catch and kill” operation.
Anyway, Ernie, glad to hear you’re “om twitter.” Hope the Novocain has worn off by now.
Christopher says
The Secret Service’s job is to protect the President from physical harm, not political embarrassment. I don’t see why they should have warned him about Weinstein’s connections to Black Cube.

I think you’re joking.
The giveaway is “Tabloids do not ask long lists of embarrassing questions; they buy up embarrassing stories and then kill them as a favor to their influential friends. Nobody who has ever waited in a checkout line would seriously write this.
At least this comment is perfectly consistent with the diary — entirely content-free.
