Mueller Protection Rapid Response: National Protests called for Thursday, November 8, 5 pm
Memo I just received from friends at moveon.org. Details about protest locations and times are here.
Donald Trump has installed a crony to oversee the special counsel’s Trump-Russia investigation, crossing a red line set to protect the investigation. By replacing Rod Rosenstein with just-named Acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker as special counsel Robert Mueller’s boss on the investigation, Trump has undercut the independence of the investigation. Whitaker has publicly outlined strategies to stifle the investigation and cannot be allowed to remain in charge of it. The Nobody Is Above The Law network demands that Whitaker immediately commit not to assume supervision of the investigation.
Stand up for the Rule of Law !
You would have liked the one in Lowell. Alexandra Chandler was one of the speakers.
Alexandra Chandler is one of the rising stars in the Democratic party and my close friend. Thanks for the shout out.
I was closer to home at the Reading protest where more than 50 activists demonstrated.
A prominent conservative lawyer and prominent liberal lawyer teamed up to decry the unconstitutionality of the appointment. Notable since the liberal is Neal Katyal, the former Solicitor General under President Obama and the conservative was George Conway (no relation) a former federal clerk who happens to be the husband of Kellyanne. They make a persuasive case that the Senate has a role to play in confirming any replacement Attorney General and that the President simply does not have the authority to bypass Rod Rosenstein and appoint a chief of staff to lead the Department of Justice without the advice and consent of the Senate.
Very true, and sadly almost certainly irrelevant.
Here’s how I think it plays out. Aggrieved citizens bring legal action to block the appointment. That legal action is quickly either dismissed or appointed by a Supreme Court packed with right-wing Trumpists.
Game over, thanks for playing.
This is all just talk, and talk doesn’t mean spit today.
There were more than 900 protests nationwide.
